Threepeat; Cats Bury Hawks

Northwestern didn't hit a field goal for the final 4:14 of the first half...and they still scored 48 points and led Iowa by 21 points at intermission.

Yeah, that's no typo.

It was yet another night where Iowa's half court defense let down and allowed an opponent to go off from three-point range. It was the fourth straight conference opponent to have a player hit at least three against the Hawks as Northwestern beat Iowa 90-71.

As deadly as Illinois was in the first half against Iowa (8 of 10 treys), Northwestern was more potent, hitting ten first half three's plus an old school three point play. They wound up hitting 14 of 28 treys for the game.

Northwestern led Iowa by 27 points at one juncture of the game. Devyn Marble missed five straight free throws in the game.

Unfortunately, Iowa fans have seen more than their share of basketball beat downs over the past five or so years, but this one is going to stand out...or maybe it will just blend in to the haze that has been the Hawkeye basketball program since Northwestern State knocked 3rd seeded Iowa out of the 2006 NCAA tournament.

I have watched most of Iowa's games since the 1981 season and while some losses have been uglier, few have been more demoralizing.

I could go on and on with jaw dropping lowlights, but I don't want to be arrested for Hawk on Hawk crime here. You get the picture.

It's certainly the low-point of the Fran McCaffery era thus far and it will be tough to top. In a year in which we knew there would be growing pains and rough outings this might take the cake as the worst overall performance by the Hawkeyes this year. If it's not, I have no desire to watch the game that is.

It wasn't just three pointers, either. The Cats were getting the loose balls and offensive rebounds in the second half. Hustle plays...and when you can't win that battle when your opponent is shooting the lights out, you may as well not show up.

Bryce Cartwright showed up for Iowa, scoring 25 points and Matt Gatens scored 20.

Beyond that, it's probably best I stop now as the rest is plain ugly and not worth reliving.
