Thoughts on game yesterday.....What are yours?

I was happy to see the hawks do the following:

Dominate on D

Get Rogers and Coker some action (I like how both run, but both will need to get lower when getting contact).

No serious injuries from the post game with Coach Ferentz

Ricky really threw the ball nice all day......in the rain......that's really good:cool:

Still a bit concerned about Kick off coverage. Ball State didn't hit it but it seems like our coverage wasn't filling all the lanes again.

Also we had a number of penalties. Some were not good calls but we need to do better.

Overall it was a good game to get us back on track for a nice week of practice and prep for a big game with Penn State.

When the year is done I'd guess our concerns/regrets will stem from pass coverage, the inablility to run in short yardage situations, and the place kicking game.

I'm hoping the D line dominance starts to benefit the back 7 and the o-line continues to improve. We really need to see some people step it up to meet the lofty expectations most of us have for this team. Hats off to Mike Daniel as he's the one guy who seems to be playing at a higher level then anticipated.

The real season starts Saturday. I hope we're ready, but there certainly are concerns. Before the season I was pretty convinced we'd be better then everyone except Ohio State. Right now Wisky, MSU, and maybe even Mich/PSU could be there right with us as the season progresses. Certainly we'll all know more in a couple of weeks. If we play well offensively against Penn State my comfort level will certainly go up

I liked seeing Keenan Davis make plays and seeing Coker run with confidence. The two things I saw that really pleased me.

Everything went fine Def played well like it has for the last three years and offense really controlled the game nice warm up for big ten football.

This- Keenan made it look effortless (albeit a very bad Ball St team) when he got is opportunity.

And I'll agree with Clim, I'm not convinced we played all that well on kick coverage yesterday. Found myself still holding my breath at times because there were huge return lanes that were evident from TV yesterday.

Dows: I think maybe Rogers and Coker will give us the short yardage backs we need since Jewel is out. I liked how both seemed to fall forward. On Short yardage at this point we need to run left.

I also think we need to continue working on kick coverage but our D has been good and will continue to be good. We haven't really given up too many points and are best on yards per game allowed in the nation. OUR D is really good and barring lots of injuries will stay good. Daniels and the other linemen need to take advantage of all the attention AC is getting.....he had 2 or 3 guys on him most plays yesterday and still made some plays, but that left the others man on man and they beat their guys. We need to keep doing that.

K Davis looked good and so did DJK and Reisner. The O Line will be ok I think but are young and learning. I think we will be ok and its not time to sound the SOS just yet.

Coker was fun to watch also in that group seeing CJ knock someone on his butt was prob highlight of the second half. Other than that thought the number 1s played well. DJK some good routes but he sees harder coverage in practice from our 2s.

I thought the Offense was good for the most part. Few dropped passes. They weren't as crisp as they were in some earlier games. It was good to see them do a roll out and a screen pass. A-Rob looked good. Coker looked good too, he is a good number 2 at this point. 45 points with most of the second third string in midway through the third quarter on. All in all good days work.
On Defense, they were dominate as we would expect. They gave up 56 rushing and 56 passing so that definately qualifies as domination. It was good to see Clayborn get a sack.

Very nice win, the defense was flawless. Offensively they were running like a well oiled machine, but they left quite a few plays out there. And the turnovers were very disappointing. All in all a nice effort, and a good tune up game before the BigTen starts.

It's tough to tell, considering the competition, but...

Pros:
1) RBs all ran well.
2) Stanzi made good decisions, for the most part, no picks. 19 for 25, but I know for a fact that at least 3 of those incomplete passes were drops by the receivers.
3) Our second team's been getting in much needed reps. Last year, I don't think we lose the Northwestern game if Vandenberg has more than just the ISU game to get game experience.

Downs:
1) Penalties. You just can't have holding and fall starts when you're playing a team like Ball State at home. I know that a few calls were questionable, but still.
2) Dropped passes. Including a TD dropped in the endzone. I do understand the rain and cold probably had a lot to do with it, but when we're battling teams in the Big Ten, we can't afford too many missed opportunities.
3) It was a drubbing of Ball State. We know barely anything about this team. We cleaned up on EIU and ISU, but struggled against Arizona. Hopefully that won't prove to be the case after this latest beatdown we delivered.

Ball state was really really really bad, maybe worst team we have played all year.

I know it's not comparable, but Ball State scored 30 points against Toledo and lost by 7. Penn State scored 22 points on Toledo and won by 9. So Ball State scored 8 more points, but we held them to 0.

To many penalties, dropped passes, special teams giving up to many yrds.Trying to think like coach always room for improvement.I don't think were as good as some thought,we have a ways to go.
