Thoughts after 1 game...

Gesell - He is legit. This kid is quicker than I thought he was. He will definitely be a step up defensively when compared to BC. Not sure how he will hold up against B1G point guards but he should benefit from going against Clemmons (who is built like a football player). I think he will be a 27 minute guy with about 22 or 23 coming at the pg and 4 to 5 at sg.

Clemmons - He has a ways to go as a polished offensive player but he can play defense and seems like he can overpower most pgs with the drive. His development will be instrumental as Gesell needs someone that can keep it so he won't have to play the whole game.

Marble - He can clearly score but I don't think he has anything but length going for him on the defensive side of the ball. This is our top scorer and the offense should go through him whether he ends up being the leading scorer or not as he has the best all-around offensive game.

Ogelsby - I think he is still too unselfish. I want him to always want to put up the 3 point shot as he has as good of a shot as I have seen. I don't care if he is 0 for 7 on the day he needs to stroke the three. He hasn't developed defensively as I had hoped (thought Gatens would have got to him more last year).

White - He is a match up nightmare at the 3 or the 4. The problem with him at the 3 is they will sag and make him hit 3s. I also think him and Marble will be defensive liabilities on the wing as they aren't quick enough to keep smaller guys in front of them. They could be great denial players but on ball defense will be a struggle. Still you have to get your top guys on the floor and it looks like to do that he needs to be at the 3.

May - A lot hinges on May staying healthy. He brings a lot of experience and leadership. He could be a great spark off the bench and if he can get out and run we can see some high flying as he is as athletic as you can find. He is probably our best experienced wing defender (meaning Ingram is probably our best wing defender).

Ingram - I think if Uthoff was eligible he would be redshirted but since that isn't the case we need to play him. I would be surprised if he gets more than 8 minutes a game. The only ways I see that happening is if May is hurt or if May is really struggling.

McCabe - The leader of the team (imo). This kid brings a toughness no one else does. He can finally play his best position and not be forced to do things he isn't great at. I think he will foul less and really flourish with a better role as the starting 4. I expect him and the guards to have a great pick and pop game going on.

Basabe - Maybe found his best role last year because of his struggles. He will be a defensive and offensive spark plug as the 6th man. I expect him and McCabe to basically split the time and both to play some at the 5 giving them both over 20 min. He should benefit the most from Woodbury and Olaseni altering shots so he can clean them up with blocks. His rebounding is really good as he was by far the best rebounder on the court the other night.

Woodbury - I actually was disappointed in his rebounding. I thought he used his body better in high school. He can't expect to get rebounds against B1G posts relying on height. If he can learn to rebound better I think everything else will fall into place. All I want him to do is clean the glass get a put back here and there, pass to the open guy and alter shots (not block) we have Basabe and White who are great and solid (respectively) at that.

Olaseni - Still very raw. I just want the same things from him as I do from Woodbury. Lucky thing is that they don't have to do a lot as the other guys should be able to take pressure off the center position and help them out a lot.

Uthoff - Can't wait until he is eligible next year he will allow even more versatility and add another true shooter. Plus he is another wing to take pressure off of guys like Marble and Gesell as go to guys.

Meyer - I think he could really be a great surprise next year even though he won't have to play much and won't be expected to do a lot.

expecting to much from a 7'1 FR in his 1st game
don't underrstand the lack of faith in Marble's defensive ability after being the leading stl leader on the team with 54, better than Gatens guarding the other teams pg's who ussually are the best ball handlers and the quickest players on the floor
White is also quick enough, 1st game he led team in steals with 4, tjey are not highly reguarded but they were still 6'7 and quick

quick doesn't always equal steals...and steals doesn't always come from quick. I said they could be good deny defenders but on ball defense will lack. Sometimes the steal happens as a last ditch effort because you get beat. Gatens was a better defender than Marble it wasn't even close. Watch the game and you know it isn't the stats it is what you see.

Nice summary my friend. I think u are waaaaay ahead of yourself with the "go to guy" comment about Uthoff tho. And yes, Woodbury will struggle mightily if he plays against the BIG like he did the other night. I've never been on the bandwagon with him to begin with. It's one game tho.

You guys are too hard on Woody. I thought he had an excellent 1st game. He had some great moves around the basket, played some fine defense and even made some free throws. He sure looked like a starter 5 in the B1G to me. Mike Gesell had a fine first game as well. I am looking forward to being in Carver tomorrow night and seeing an uptempo extravaganza against Keno.

So happy this team plays again tomorrow night! Quick turnaround means we get to leave the stank of that football team behind in a hurry! Going to be fun watching these kids play this year!

I have seen this posted on many sites it ussually takes bigs a year to adjust, did a little looking of the top 10 bigs the last few years, outside of Zeller most of them avg 3-4 pts per game with a couple avg'ing 7 ppg. this is why I am keeping my expectation for Woody in check

Great investigation!!

If healthy, peter Jok will also be a big addition to the team next year. Right now, Iowa does not have a pure shooter of his abilities on the team, other than possibly MG. Jok can really shoot the rock.

With the exception of Oleseni of course.

Then why did you predict 8-10 PPG and 8-10 RPG last year for Gabe?

Woody will be great. Just having his presence down low is going to alter shots. He is still adjusting to the game and will fill into his role nicely as the season progresses. Ingram will be very good as well. Really like his size and the way he moves to the hoop with or without the ball. So happy basketball is worth talking about again.

I never said uthoff was a go to guy I said he would be a solid wing to take pressure off the go to guys of marble and gesell. But trust me uthoff could end up being a go to guy. He has the skill.

Don't worry, that's just BasketballMan being BasketballMan. Wrong about everything.

Woodbury has some learning to do, that's for sure. But when you're a 7-footer in Iowa high school ball, you really aren't allowed to get physical because you're already a foot taller than everyone else on the floor. That's not the case anymore, and Woody will have to learn how to use his body more effectively to get rebounds. That will come with time and experience, IMO.
