Jon, I thought Gamble was the best player on the team by the end of that season. Marble got way more hype, but Gamble seemed like the better all-around and more valuable player. Without looking, I'm guessing Gamble shot a better percentage. I also recall (a bit of a jump here admittedly) that he moved the ball better than Marble and was a more consistent team defender (Marble went for the steals).
I think I even read some quotes in the past year or two from Close in which he said the staff thought Gamble was their best player that season. He was such a complete player.
Amazing group of perimeter players on that roster. Two of any of the 5 (Marble, Gamble, Jones, Moe and Armstrong) would have started on almost every Iowa squad of the past 15 years.
