I don't buy into that when you see the same upperclassmen making the same mistakes.
Trying to take over the game and not involve teammates who are playing well, not rotating on defense and contesting shots, players playing prominent roles not being leaders.
Since I cannot call out players without getting banned I won't, but it is tempting.
When I look at this game, there is no way Iowa should have lost...get a lead and then go away from what got the lead. It isn't experience it has everything to do with players not really understanding their roles and making poor choices.
Why was Olaseni taken off the floor, then consequently Purdue gets another uncontested layup with said upperclassmen not rotating over to contest the shot? Basabe did his job by putting a body on the only rebounder that was in the area, he couldn't contest there. It is amazing to see the same low post defense at times that made Iowa look awful last season on that end. Olaseni was getting "man" type rebounds with Basabe and they were both contesting shots.

I really liked the Olaseni-Basabe-White-Marble-Gesell lineup. Good size and gave us the best scoring chance today. Purdue wasn't running the high pick and rolls which get Olesani in trouble. Also White needs to start shooting those elbow extended jumpers when he gets the chance, for some reason he's basically stopped shooting jumpers.

I'll say it. Marble needs to stop trying to take over the game. He can't do it against better than average defenses. When the focus is on good ball movement, the offense isn't great, but it's okay. When we decide to stop doing that and let Marble try to break down athletic defenders, everything grinds to a halt in the half court and we become completely dependent upon transition buckets.
White will have a good career here, but he's not going to be a truly good player until he develops a reliable jumper from 15 feet and a decent 3-point shot (32% or better). Teams just don't have to respect him on the perimeter, which severely limits him in the half court. He has to be running and gunning to get points.
The problem for Marble is at any given time up to 3 other guys on the court are doing nothing but looking to hand it back to him. Get better players around him and things will start to open up more for him.

Marble isn't good enough to have other people standing around watching him play, Iowa is far from being a team that can have one specific guy carry them through any game. The talent around Marble, specifically Gesell/Basabe are becoming the guys I want to see get the ball a whole lot more and they are good players.
White has to use his mid-range game a lot more, he is too easy to defend not doing so. He has proven he can hit it, take more shots from there instead of driving and getting charges, or throwing up a shot that has zero chance at going in.

Funny, because one of those inexperienced freshman was the only guy on the court with a pulse for a large portion of the game.

20 games in if we are good, we don't score less than 20 in a half at Purdue. Not an excuse. Losing at home or away to Michigan, I'll buy it. Purdue is a project team as well. They played a tougher NC schedule so therefore maybe have more experience.

Zach Mccabe is a junior now and he still doesnt rotate over on defense. That last possession of regulation was borderline criminal on Mccabe's part defensively. Not only does he not get over on Johnson penetrating, hes so late he doesnt even touch him and lets him shoot an uncontested layup to tie the game. At least club him and make him beat you at the line, but no he wasnt even in position to do that. In ******* excusable, especially a junior.

The biggest problem I see with us offensively is that we would still rather go east and west then we would north and south. It's not difficult to guard a guy on the perimeter when the offense rarely gets the ball down low. We have to be able to play inside to our bigs to free up space for the shooters. Not saying the bigs have to look to score everytime, but way to many possessions are wasted doing nothing but moving the ball around the perimeter and failing to go inside. Not hard to defend.

While I agree with you to a point. As poorly as Iowa shot the ball the first 30 minutes, you could make the argument that Purdue did everything they could to allow Iowa to stay in the game. IMO despite how close it ended up and the fact that we had a lead late in the game you cannot expect to win games on the road in this conference when you cannot make anything from the field.

This team needs to develop the desire to kill. That first half was some of the worst basketball I've seen in a long time, by both teams. They still need to develop that desire to come out and punish the opponent from the beginning and then keep it up for the entire game. No more allowing a team to come back from 20 points down. No more letting a game slip away at then end.
They did do a great job of not quitting and coming back to take the lead, but then they had the usual breakdowns at the end and let it slip away. I really hope that they figure it out soon so that an NCAA bid is still in sight.
All this doesn't mean they won't still lose a game they should have won, or get blown out by somebody. Look at what happened to Duke at Miami, or Indiana at home vs Wisconsin.
