This is a 2nd half team

This defense in particular does not get tired. The pressure by the line got better every quarter.

Also, huge turnaround by the offensive line which started on their heels and starting blowing guys up in the 2nd half.

Good points. I would even say in the hawks big top 10 wins against ISU and PSU they were a good final 3 quarters team. They had better 2nd qtrs against ISU and PSU, against Maryland, and most teams. Then they play very solid in the 2nd half.

What do you think they can do, especially on offense, to come out humming like a finely tuned machine from the opening kick? Do they need certain pass plays that give Petras simple targets, maybe stationary targets or simple out patterns or bubble screens to get him comfortable? Maybe just run straight ahead power run plays?

The d-line goes two deep at every position. There is no superstar, but there are two lineups of 4 deep solid Big Ten caliber linemen. You can wear out an o-line and we did it yesterday. If we could get just one guy back from last year, I would pick Nixon. If we had him clogging the middle and blowing up pass plays right in the QB's face I honestly think this team would have a chance in a 10-9 dogfight against any team in the USA. As things look now, a team with a really good and patient QB and one good WR is going to have a field day against the defense provided they don't get injured.

This offense relies on setting things up. We all know we never field great offenses but they are surprisingly complex. Everything we do is testing a defense. We saw it last night with the TD to Raigani, that was a left hook after 10 rounds of right jabs.

With that said, we do need to get some early scores to keep winning or it will bite eventually. If we can put up 14 in the first half consistently i don’t see anyone beating us.

I would say that we have two "big games" left on the schedule - Braska and Wisconsin. In one of those games, I would run Petras on a QB sneak on the first play. Just get 4 or 5, make it second and five and I think things would go well. Come out in that tight I formation and have Pottebaum push. I think the psychological impact of your interior line getting physically manhandled on the first play would go a long way to getting the offense started a little faster.

This feels like a vintage Ferentz team and we can't slip up against Purdue. If we win that game (I think we lose 24-23 but maybe there will be a miracle and we will find a way to win) and then get the bye week, I think you will see a big jump in the offense. This just looks like one of those teams where the bye week is going to be completely transformative in offensive line play and in the passing attack.

The PSU game was an emotional, high energy game. I can see them coming out a little flat against Purdue.

Agreed. And Brohm has been exceptional against Kurt and Co. The guy dials up perfect plays at the perfect time against our defense.

Homecoming week they better not be flat! They need to take Purdue to the woodshed in revenge of last year.
