Very strange. Sparty kind of has a recent history of choking. A TD there would have been demoralizing (not to the players most likely but to the crowd it would have been and that can be contagious to the players) plus it would have been a huge momentum boost.

I understand with a young QB you don't want to take chances but why not? You weren't supposed to have the ball there anyways so you might as try to get a TD.

That was on the coaches. They called a running play (unless the QB just decided to do so) so they should have expected that they might have to call a timeout afterward.

Iowa's staff has had more than their share of clock management issues. I think a more telling difference is Illinois had three personal foul penalties called against them in the 3rd quarter alone. No discipline.
