The worst teams in the Big 10 will be awful this year.

MN has a good chance of going 0-12. The worst O in the Big 10 returns almost every starter but they lose almost every starter from a decent defense.

Il is staring a freaking freshman at QB which never works well.

I only care because those teams are really gonna mess up our (and OSU and Wisky) BCS rating because of the weak as hell strength they will give us.

Ill could be a train wreak, but i don't think minny drops off that bad. this could be the end for the zooker if the wheels fall off.

I have no idea who Minnesota lost on defense, but they weren't bad last year on that side of the ball.

like you said, "MN returns every starter on offense". and this somehow means they won't improve what so ever?

I'm betting I can find a dozen+ posts on here that say how much better Iowa will be in 2010 due to the amount of starters from last year returning.

do only Iowa players improve with experience and make positive strides during the off season?

Actually...most of those posts have a tiny little 2 letter word in them somewhere..."Iowa's offense should be much improved with all of the starters they return "if" Stanzi can stay away from the interceptions and "if" the offensive line gels...

I know it's hard to see all of those little words when it's coming from the fans of a team you hate...besides, have you never heard the old sports joke..."the good news is, we return everyone on offense from last year's team...the bad news is, we return everyone on offense from last year's team!" It's the same joke Iowa fans would be saying about another year of Lickliter in basketball...minus transfers...

Almost every starter. They may return every starter from their bowl game (not sure) but as you probably know there offense was god awful that game. They had one shining spot on offense last year and he is gone. That being said, no way MN goes 0-12. 4-8 is where I see them, unless something drastic changes.

Just looked at their schedule. Kinda brutal. I expect MN to go 3-1 in non-conf, but in conference their 4 home games are IA, OSU, PSU, and NW. They could easily go winless in conference but I expect them to steal one against IL or Purdue.

Illinois' redshirt QB will probably be an upgrade from what they have had in the past. I could see a 6-6 or 7-5 team from them this season.

I thought they changed the spelling of stanzi to "heisman"?

Minnesota racked up 434 yards of offense against ISU. Just saying. ISU had around 450 - when was the last time you saw a game where both teams had 400+ yards of offense but couldn't score?

Unfortunately for those two teams, football is played on 100 yard field and not an 80 yard field. Offenses job is to put up points, not just yards. But I see what you are saying, weak defenses ;).

Well yeah, the defenses were pretty inept. Still, the fact that two team can both account for 400+ yards of offense and only score 14 and 13 points tells you everything you need to know about how watchable that game was.

It wasn't just the defenses that were inept.

On Minny:

Minnesota's experienced depth on D is poor. They're a few injuries away from being a really bad team. The Gopher O has the potential to be decent ... however, a lot of their future will rely upon improvement on the OL and greater consistency from more of their WRs. A big reason why the Gopher O sucked so bad was because Fisch tried to have the guys bite off too much ... the guys was a decent teacher on the pro-level, but he sucked on the college level.

However, it should be noted that the Gopher starting D has some pretty darn nice talent. The problem is that they aren't swimming with experience and their coaches on D pale in comparison to those at Iowa, PSU, and tOSU. In other words, the high ceiling guys who they do have are less likely to achieve their potential there.

On the Illini:

Kind of a tough call here. The Illini are actually pretty loaded with talent on O, however, the problem is that they're going to be featuring inexperience at some pretty important spots. Specifically, due to injuries and graduation, they return only 2 starters on the OL. Similarly, they're going to start a FR at QB. Lastly, TEs are pretty important in Petrino's O ... and the Illini lack a really proven guy there too.

On D, the picture maybe gets even more hazy. They lost a multi-year starter in Brent on the DL and it's not clear if their top safety from the '09 season will contribute much due to his involvement in some illegal activity (the same activity that led to Lendell Buckner getting canned).

The Illini D will enjoy improved coaching on D, however, to offset that, they also have to contend with all new schemes. Furthermore, they're hurting some in the experience department.

Purdue I think is going to be the most improved team in the Big Ten this year. I don't see them losing to Minny. Illinois, yes. But if Marve can play to his potential, the Boiler offense could be downright scary with Bolden, Smith, Valentine, and Marve. Plus they still have Kerrigan on defense (who would be getting Clayborn-type hype if he had played for a better team last year). They could very easily finish the regular season with 8 wins, maybe more. They have an easy OOC slate (ND is their toughest opponent, and I think they'll beat the Irish), so chalk up 4 wins there. They also get Minny, Indiana, and Michigan at home, plus Illinois on the road. MSU and Northwestern (both on the road) are the two games that the Boilers COULD win, but end up dropping, IMO.

A few issues though is that they're down their top RB, they have to replace a bunch of veteran talent on the OL from their 2009 squad, and they have to replace a bunch of veteran talent at DB too. A weak Boilermaker OL + a porous secondary could lead to losses in games that they could/should win.

I thought the word was that Bolden would actually be ready to go by the opener? I thought he blew out his knee early enough that he wasn't expected to miss any games?
