The test for B.Ferentz

First off, yes I know that rhymes. Skillz, me, got em.

Watch the end of this game. Iowa can put it away with a first down. But nope, 3 & out. Over the years, this has become an Iowa hallmark on offense. Not being able to move it on offense when the game is on the line. KOK? Davis? Same results.

Brian IMO can prove himself with his play-calling when Iowa needs the offense late in the half (both halves). Admittedly, it is very difficult to do. But if Iowa wants to get beyond averaging 7.5 wins per year, they're gonna have to show some creativity when the opponent is expecting the same ole same ole.

If Brian succeeds in this area, then our win-average should improve.

I do love Beth Mowins describing the field goal proficiency of the Gopher kicker just before their last possession with 1:30 left in the game, with the Gophers down by 7; then, realizing her error, adroitly states that the FG option is off the table. That's just below "Do you believe in miracles?" or "Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!!" or even "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!". Give me some more Beth Mowins. :)

Yeah not sure what was worse. Our 4 min offense or 2 min. A simple thing to do is lineup in formations other than double tight end with a fullback. Just because you know you’re going to run the ball doesn’t mean you have to totally give it away to the defense just by the formation that that’s what you’re going to do. Go 3 wide. Heck have one or two of them be TEs yet still lined up out there to crack down and block once the play starts. Look at how easy converting that 2 pt conversion was from that diamond formation. If you can formationally have it so they can’t have 9 or 10 guys in the box just crashing down against the run obviously that’d be in our favor. Now if the defense totally ignores how your lined up anyway then have a quick hitting audible to pass it to whomever might be wide open. ‘Scratch where it itches’ is the phrase I’m looking for….

That possession Iowa had with under 5 mins to go where CJ on 3rd and long did what he did was terrible by him all the way around. I’d have rather he threw an incomplete pass then take that shot he took by leaping and going out of bounds… I don’t think it was a designed roll out to the left so why go that way totally limiting what he had for options. That was a mistake you’d expect from a young qb not a 5th yr sr. Any kind of a play there that stays in bounds that would have made them burn a TO or run the clock would have been better than that. Regardless of converting it or not.

as long as the guy utilizes his best players and minimizes his weaknesses I'll take my chances. Oh, and if that went over your head I want to see 2 or 3 TE formations this year, Iowa doesn't have the WRs but it's an embarassment of riches at TE. Yes, TE's in the slot would count as a 2 or 3 TE formation.
