Here is our TE group as it currently stands.

Drew Cook 6’5” 252 Sr.
Nate Wieting 6’4” 250 Sr.
Shawn Beyer 6’5” 244 Jr.
Noah Feldman 6’5” 235 Soph.
Tommy Kujawa 6’3” 235 Soph.
Bryce Schulte 6’3” 244 Soph.
Jackson Frericks 6’6” 200 Fr.
Sam LaPorta 6’4” 242 Fr.
Logan Lee 6’5” 251 Fr.
Josiah Miamen 6’4” 235 Fr.

Overview: I think Cook, Weiting, and Beyer will be a pleasant surprise this year. It would’ve been nice if Cook would’ve made the transition from QB to TE sooner.
Schulte, Kujawa, Feldman- I think Schulte is the only one in this group that stays at this position. I think I heard Kujawa would transition to FB and Feldman probably won’t see the field until Jr. or Sr. year, but not at TE.
Next up, Miamen, LaPorta, Lee, and Frericks. I believe all these guys will RS. I know Lee is also listed at DE, but I think he switches back considering how many DE’s we’ve recruited in the next class. Plus I am not sure that nationally, TE will be that loaded of a group to recruit from next year. Frericks will be another possible position change.
So far we have Elijah Yelverton committed and some are saying Luke Lachey is a silent commit. Still would love to add Theo Johnson to this group.
I am confident that we will be fine for the foreseeable future and beyond at the TE position. More All-Americans and Mackey Award winners are on the horizon guys.

I also think the group this year will be above-average, and not too extreme of a dropoff from last year. I don't think Cook switching earlier would have made much of a difference in the outlook, however. He switched in the spring of 2017. He has had more than 2 years of working at this, he would probably not gain much from another year at practicing this position. The only thing that would speed his development is playing time, and he would not have earned any of that by switching a year earlier.

If Lee moves back to offense, I think he will become an OT. I would love to see him as a monster-blocking TE as well, we will see.

Predictions for combined production?

56 for 840 and 14 TDs in 2017.
90 for 1330 and 13 TDs in 2018.

It seems like this crew might bear some similarities to Kittle and Krieger-Coble in 2015. TE production that year:
56 for 705, 7 TDs.

It seems like the safe bet would be something around 50-60 receptions for about 800 yards and half a dozen+ TDs.

That would be a loss of 500+ yards from last year; can we reasonably expect to make up that production by WRs and RBs in the passing game? I think so, but that will remain to be seen.

I bet either Miamen, Lee or LaPorta will end up in the 2 deeps by October. Iowa isn’t afraid of playing freshman TEs
