The Tale of Dr Jekyll and Coach Ferentz

Ferentz is on pace to go into the college football hall of fame as the all-time leader in timeouts remaining at the end of the game. We play good teams where our O needs to score points and we milk to clock or sit on the ball to avoid "mistakes" to end the half.

Today, Ferentz decides to pull out his crazy guy attitude and punch IU in the McNutts by using not one, but two timeouts to stop the clock without the ball. I just about fell out of my chair when he did it. Of course, its the right call, but its the right call in every game not just against an absolutely gawd awful team like IU.

His madness continues after we receive the punt. We are short of a 1st down, clock ticking away and he finally calls for the TO after 10 or so seconds run off the clock. Dial up McNutt he says to himself. Why not, right? Again, its the right call in every situation but it never happens against teams that 7 points mean the difference between winning and losing.....

So I ask you this. Why today and never against good teams?

I understand what you are saying and also share you frustration at times. I think this is an illustration of this years team putting pennies in the trust bank. Ferentz knows he has to rely more on the offense this season, but I think that goes against his coaching instincts. If Iowa continues to deliver today and next week against Minnesota than lay your mortgage payment on the over versus Michigan.

Short answer: because good teams don't leave McNutt in single coverage when they have a true freshman covering him.

There is no call that is right in every situation. That's just not how it works. I'm also having a hard time figuring out how this complaint fits with the "we let bad teams hang around" complaint.

That is where I disagree. Against a good Michigan team he will shut it down, play small ball so to speak. He will try and play field position, run a conservative offensive and defensive set. He won't blitz on 2nd or 3rd and long and will refuse to throw the ball down field which allows Michigan to play close to the line. All of those he has done today against a terrible IU team.

WTF. Can't we just enjoy the asswhuppin' we're putting on IU??

The timeouts in the first half showed that coach didn't have much confidence in the defense the way they were playing. I'm guessing he figured they needed as many points as they could get.

And that is different from our other games? Come on, quit defending the inability of this staff to figure out how to manage a damn clock.

FYI - I covered so I'm happy.

Cuz the score was 28-14.

Indiana was inside their own 15.

KF wanted Indiana to punt.

All kinds of bad things can happen when a team punts.

All kinds of good things can happen when a team forces another team to punt.

One of those good things is great field position with over a minute left and one TO.

=

Touchdown Iowa

35-14

KF being KF is all that happened. This time it worked really really well because Indiana isn't good.

So I ask you this: Why did Fry only use his 'exotics' when up big or against scrubs?

This is the correct answer.

Very legit question. Been saying it for long time that I've never seen a coach not use his Timeouts. KF been doing that since he arrived.

Bielema used his timeouts agressively at the end of the Wisky-MSU game and it cost him a shot at a national title...but hey, better to be agressive and lose than be conservative and win,I know...cus it make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Winning is overrated...being a gambler is cool....nice job BB.

Ferentz didn't use his timeouts at the end of the Iowa/Ohio State and it cost him a shot at a B10 title. But hey, it's better to be agonizingly conservative and lose and be aggressive and win, because it makes you feel better when you can say that you don't lose games by very much.

It works both ways...and in both cases it can blow up in the face of the coach making the decision. Put me in the camp that shows faith in your players to make a play.

I, too, had to pick myself up off the floor when he went aggressive at the end of the half, and I was asking myself the same thing. As others have noted, it's KF just being KF, love it or hate it. It drives me nuts when he plays it conservative with less than two minutes left in the half of a close game or the end of regulation in a tie game.
