The "Search Firm"

Does anyone think it would be cool to work for one of these firms? Does anyone know if there is more than one that does this sort of thing in college coaching searches?

Sure it would be cool, because if your firm screws the pooch on the hire, it isn't your head that rolls.

A good AD doesn't need a search firm to help them identify a good coach. Most AD's have a list they keep just in case they have to fire a coach and replace them. That's why I am not real confident that Barta knows what he is doing or can identify the up and coming coaches.

I think you are wrong, Buzz.

I bet these firms are the norm so that a coach can be contacted FOR a school without being contacted BY the school. I would like to see how many use these firms. I would be it is the norm.

Name ONE division 1 program in either football or basketball in the last twenty years that hasn't used a search firm when replacing a head coach.

I'll be waiting...

Iowa State Gene Chizik and Paul Rhoads??? Wasn't Rhoads hired within 2 or 3 days after Chizik left?

Definitely the "norm" in todays society. Most coaches have an agent that represents them and that allows contact to be made without having to play everything out in the press. Also, the search firm screens all applicants, so the AD or committee don't have to spend a lot of time looking through all of the interested parties. They guage interest, come up with salary demands, and keep everything anonymous.

Not just athletic departments use these firms, many corporations, and other groups use them - it gives you a lot of input and allows a broader net of qualified applicants.

I would have to question an AD's intelligence if they did Not use a search firm. They do the research, have the connections, keep things confidential, do the back ground check, determine the level of interest, etc, etc.
No AD has that information at hand. Even if you had what you thought was the best candidate, you would be a complete id10t not to hire a firm to make sure the guy didn't have skeleton's in the closet.

Pollard didn't hire a search firm?

Who cares about Pollard!? I highly doubt he is dumb enough not to consult someone when making the hires that he has to make. If he does, then he is a far larger moron than we all thought! ;)
