The [S]Party's Over for Sparty tomorrow...

...at least we can hope.

I posted something similar in another thread. However, after doing the leg work looking up the scores, I thought it might warrant its own thread (because even I was surprised when the numbers backed up my memory so well).

Basically, in the other thread, there was quoted some talk from Izzo regarding winning it all to prove that MSU is the class of the B1G (after ending the regular season on a sour note, losing to Ohio State and causing a 3-way tie for 1st in the B1G).

However, as I mentioned in the other thread, let Izzo and the Spartys think about winning it all, while Iowa focuses solely on beating MSU. I'd imagine that the MSU players are thinking to rounds 3 and 4 of the tourney after blowing Iowa out by 34 in East Lansing. On the other hand, Sparty will certainly be getting Iowa's FULL attention tomorrow (for at least the same reason).

The problem for Sparty is, Iowa always plays terribly in East Lansing. In other words, the game in early January is ZERO indication of what we should expect to see tomorrow (at least from a historical perspective).

In 2002, Iowa lost by 14 in East Lansing and won by 4 at home.

In 2003, Iowa lost by 28 in East Lansing and won by 4 at home.

In 2004, Iowa only played MSU once, losing by 17 in East Lansing.

In 2005, Iowa lost by 11 at home and won by 2 in the BTT (i.e., no games in East Lansing).*Corrected per below comments*

In 2006, Iowa lost by 30 in East Lansing, only to win by 12 at home AND 5 in the BTT.

In 2007, Iowa lost by 32 in East Lansing and won by 2 at home.

In 2008, Iowa lost by 14 in East Lansing and won by 7 at home.

In 2009, Iowa lost both...by 15 at home and 8 on the road.

In 2010, Iowa lost both...by 18 at home and 7 on the road.

In 2011, Iowa lost by 19 in East Lansing, won by 20 at home, but then lost by 5 in the BTT.

As I mentioned above, losing in East Lansing, even by 34 as Iowa did in early January, is ZERO indication of what will happen tomorrow (at least from a historical perspective).

So, hopefully, MSU players overlook Iowa, thinking about winning it all, and Iowa takes care of business, making this weekend a whole lot more interesting from an Iowa fan perspective.

If Iowa never goes to East Lansing they seem to play MSU tough for the most part even when MSU has been light years better.

They hardly ever compete up there though.

Iowa beat Michigan State by two in the tournament in 05 not at Michigan State FYI. I don't remember the last time Iowa won up there, probably the game after Chris Street's death.

Iowa's gonna need White and Basabe and McCabe to be on beast mode down low rebounding and need Gatens from the Indiana and Wisconsin game to pull it off.

Pretty sure your right about the last time Iowa beat the Spartans in East Lansing being after Chris Street passed.

I don't remember seeing an Iowa win there. I do remember Eric Snow hitting a buzzer beater to beat us in the mid to late 90's. In fact, it may have happened two years in a row but that could be my fuzzy childhood memory coming into play.

I wonder how many Mich St. fans made the trip to Indianapolis? We can assume more than Iowa. Still, I think the crowd will be behind Iowa as we are the underdog and all of the other teams in the tournament would rather us than Mich St.
