The resurrection of Larry Eustachy

Fantastic story. Well worth the time to read. Great find and thanks for posting.

Somewhat aware that Larry had turned his life around, he was on my list of hopefuls when Bary Garta pulled the trigger on the Lick disaster. I'm happy with Fran but I remain convinced Eustachy also could have gotten it done here, and perhaps faster.

Good for Larry. Predict he gets a shot at a bigger program again before he hangs up the coaching whistle.

It is an awesome story and I cannot help but wonder how good Iowa State could have been if he did not have a drinking problem as he was one of the premier up and coming coaches at the time. But no way do you take this chance at Iowa. You might be able to get around your past recruiting at the CUSA level but no way can you get away from it recruiting in the Big Ten. Hiring a recovering alcoholic is a big time gamble and one Iowa could not afford to take.

Somebody had to do it.

We were probably another mediocre decade away from being willing to take a chance like that.

But I agree with Tweeter. If he can maintain the success at Southern Miss, he'll eventually get another shot at a Big 6 conference school. And I, for one, wouldn't bet against him. I have to think that after you've gone through national humiliation and recovery, building a basketball program seems like the easy part.

I wish him all the success in the world...to the extent that it doesn't interfere with our own. ;)

Would you support the firing of LE if he were the coach at Iowa? I would probably be pretty ticked if they fired him for that.

I'm convinced you are insane.

Had it just been alcoholism, maybe. But when pictures start circulating depicting your head man as more frat boy than basketball coach I can't blame any school for parting ways...addiction or not.

It wasn't a fireable offense imo and the right thing to do would've been to afford Larry the opportunity to get right while at Iowa State.

I will remain a Larry Eustachy fan and I didn't see it in the article but if Larry wins the CUSA he will have won a conference championship in every conference he's coached in, iirc.

I really liked Larry. Loved his style of coaching. I started watching the Clones the year they almost made the Final Four. Hawks were in a rebuilding year and playing poorly, if I remember correctly, so I started watching Marcus Fizer and the Lads. They were a very good team, and should have brought the Championship Trophy back to the Great State of Iowa. Nasty referee, who lived within 20 miles of the Silverdome, gave the game to the Spartans. Clones had them beat.....

Not only that, he should have received a bump in his salary for partying like a Man.....
