The new weights are in for the team.

One area where these guys have been working hard and showing great gains is on the offensive line. Below are some of the gains from last season.

Ike Boettger 300 +33 pounds
Cole Croston 295 +25 pounds
Boone Myers 300 +15 pounds
Austin Blythe 300 +10 pounds

I believe that this offensive line will be better than what many people think they will be.

I should also mention Ben Niemann at linebacker who is stepping up in the weight room he is now at 225 plus 20 pounds.

How long has Ryan Ward been listed as a TE? 6'5 290 lb TE? Wowzer.

He's listed as TE? WTF! I had no idea and was wondering what happened to him. He was a pretty decent recruit out of Chicago coming out of high school. Wonder what the deal is. Maybe he just peaked in high school.

So are you saying there's a "quiet confidence" about the OL?

He was a pretty highly recruited kid, but I usually don't look too much into the star ratings (4 star if I remember right). With that said I was wondering what happened to him as well. He sort of fell off the depth chart and has now reappeared as a monster TE. I'm going to go ahead and assume he's only going to be used in short yardage situations.

New QB, beefed up OL, under the radar RB recruit, complete memory loss about last season ( did Iowa play football last Fall? I have no recollection of it, if it in fact occurred). It doesn't take much to get me back on the reservation.

Ryan Ward will continue to come in for blocking at tight end. It is like having an extra tackle on the field. Maybe they will surprise an opponent by throwing to him sometime for a wide open touchdown! That would be fun to see. Yes, I am confident with this group.

Hopefully Blythe and Walsh come into their own this year. Lots of experience and strength training on their side.

In case the analogy isn't quite clear, the guy trying to see over the wall = Kurt.

I'd like to get Sean Foster from Mundelein, IL. He's a junior now 6'8" 285. Dad was a Hawkeye too.

Great stuff on the O line! I love it when you football junkies find stuff like this for those of us who are far too lazy to dig it up. Appreciate you.

It is good news that some solid weight has been gained but let's not overlook that in today's landscape a 300 lb lineman is considered undersized, especially at tackle.

Check out the height and weight metrics at the big boy programs and you will see what I mean. Look no further than the absolute maulers Wisky puts out or the 350 lb left guard Beliema starts. Our last Rose Bowl team in 1991 the starting tackles were 285 lbs and that was nearly 25 years ago. These guys have 15 lbs at most on them.

I thought you guys might enjoy that. :)

It would be a lot funnier if I didn't believe it to be true, though. :(

Really? I went with the Super Bowl teams.

Starting offensive line for the Seattle Seahawks:
Russell Okung 6'5" 310
James Carpenter 6'5" 321
Max Unger 6'5" 305
JR Sweezy 6'5" 298
Justin Britt 6'6" 320

Starting offensive line for the New England Patriots:
Nate Solder 6'8" 320
Dan Connolly 6'4" 305
Bryan Stork 6'4" 310
Ryan Wendell 6'2" 300
Sebastian Vollmer 6'8" 320

There's more to it than size. Good feet and knowing how to use your body for leverage is as important if not more important.
