The non-penalty on Sargent screen pass-definitely holding

It is funny to listen to these announcers sometimes during games and their retired rules analysts, this time Dean Blandino.

You all saw or heard and remember this play where the hawks tried a screen to Sargent. The blockers were out in front of him but Sargent was run into and then grabbed by a nebby lineman/lbkr. No flag was throw and I heard the refs even announced there is no pass interference in the offensive backfield.

Well what about holding??? I saw it as holding, my son and several others I talked to saw it as holding. In football you cannot hold except when tackling the ball carrier. Defensive linemen get called for holding offensive linemen when they have a stunt in progress or to disrupt blocking. Running backs blocking blitzers get called for blocking. Dbacks and special teams are called for holding all the time. WReceivers do it alot whether called or not.

My point here is how dumb or blind are the refs when this play takes place in the wide open right as the ball goes over the held players head and how dumb are the TV analysts and officiating experts.

This is a hold plain and simple. I would love to have a 30 minute discussion with Kirk F about what he sees and thinks about officiating in the league and college football, especially about holding.

What do you think Kirk would say?

I remember the announcers thinking they were so brilliant with their, "no pass interference behind the line of scrimmage" analysis. Well no shit, it wasn't pass interference. It was a blatant hold. He got tackled to the ground before the ball even got there.

But what do you expect from guys who can't pronounce Ojemudia.

Haha, that is funny about pronouncing Ojemudia, when there are so many games on TV the announcer pool really gets diminished. But you would think on black Friday when there are not that many games that friggin Fox could send a top announcer to do the game and get someone who would put in some research time on players names and positions.

Fox has at least 15 more minutes of commercials on their Hawk broadcasts compared to BTN and even espn yet they cant get a top announcer to this game

You can tackle the guy behind the line of scrimmage on that play even before the ball gets there.

Here are the rules:

By the rules, I would say that was definitely holding. Unless you think he was simulating possession of the ball.

See Article 4, Paragraph C...
See Article 3, Paragraph B

Sargent was not carrying out a running fake or acting like a runner and Sargent was past the Nebby player who reached out to impede him and therefore a hold as the rules 3 para B states above.

Thanks for posting the rules TK and this is an obvious call that NFL refs get right all the time.

I think KF would say the officiating is pretty bad, from bad spotting of the ball, to not enforcing holding at LOS both ways early on in games to send a warning and to say use technique and dont cheat

In addition the ball was behind the line of scrimmage. Since neither the player or ball was past the line it was a legal play on the part the defense.

Beth Mowins would make Ojemudia come out sounding like Okoboji.

It was holding, but referees rarely call that on a slip screen, otherwise I'd have had a few of my own in college.
