The NFL is a Non-Profit Organization?!

I just read that the NFL is a 501(c)(6) non-profit in this article:

Malcolm Gladwell on the NBA lockout - Grantland

And had it confirmed by Wiki:

501(c) organization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I didn't know this before and wonder what the rationale is behind this. Perhaps someone(s) with more legal acumen could explain this to me.

Not really surprising. They're an organization (obviously) that represent 32 separate entities. The NFL isn't owned by anybody and they have no shareholders. Legally how that shakes out I don't know, but it's logical. The people making the money are the teams/owners. Certainly the league probably has significant operating expenses, but no profits.
