The next coach needs to IMMEDIATELY put his stamp on the program

One of the things that bothered me about Lick from the start is that he did nothing aesthetically or pr wise to put his own stamp on the program.

In particular, I am thinking about the student section. He kept them exactly where they were and kept the name. This student section was Alfords creation, and Lick just sort of came in and went with it.

I'd like the next coach to really use their leverage in the negotiations to put their stamp on the program immediately.

Tell Barta, that moving the students behind the benches is a must... how CHA is viewed on television is not the best it could be.

Tell Barta, that the new practice facility is great but that you want commitments that the CHA upgrades will take place within a certain number of years.

I would like to be able to tell that there is a new coach by simply walking into the arena.

I agree with this.

New coach also needs to refrain from bringing up his past program...

Some examples.

"At Butler we did it like this"

"We need to do it the Butler way"

So lame.

He needs to do just what Pelini did at Nebraska...and GOD I HATE NEBRASKA. Embrace and bring back the alumni make them available to the players, games whatever they want. Embrace what was Iowa basketball. Next thing he needs to do is connect with the students. Demand that with the rearrangement in Carver that the students surround the court at least from basket to basket on one side. Then really go out and connect with em, do something on campus with the students, whatever it takes. When the students come back Carver gets special again.

I agree with this, but I don't know if Barta even thinks about this stuff. Obviously he didn't with his last hire.

Being able to connect with not only the team, but with the fan base, is going to be HUGE in turning the program around. I'm just worried Barta doesn't see that at all, and will hire another guy without a personality.

eyes89-I feel that your point is consideration 1a. in the coaching search. 1 is ability, close second is ability to give sports marketing something to market and having the personality to do so.

Absolutely. I think Barta and lick thought that all he had to be was not a *****(ie,oppo-SA)...not good enough.

Connecting with the students has to be a huge priority. SA did it,and we had 2000 students making chaos those first few years...and we won at home. Get the students back, and the rest of the fan base will follow...fans want spectacle,an event, a big part of that is wacky student enthusiasm. This is no knock to the loyal students who have shown up thruout the lick era...tip of the hat to them.

We need a Bruce Pearl clone, basically. A little nutty aint bad,if there is substance behind it. Even Eustachy had this...students liked his fire.

It will take a special guy to succeed at Iowa...but he is out there.
