The Morning After NIU: I Found Some Silver Linings

One thing i forgot to add, however...Iowa has a legion of stud TE's...yet 90% of the passing plays seemed to be horizontalish

The silver lining is that our new QB was better then our last one... That said this is a giant stink bomb of an opening... I am sticking with my prediction that we go 2-10 this year and THAT might be a case of being kind...

Here's the dark cloud: that horizontal BS is the system and will continue until these talent-wasting coaches are run out on a rail.

After breaking down video of the NIU game, every future opponent with even half-fast receivers and a QB with a decent arm (ie, just about everyone in the conference and a couple of the OOC teams) will throw deep on Iowa's secondary. They'll also drop off coverage of the TE's because GD Greg Davis's scheme apparently doesn't include them in a receiving role.

Iowa got exposed early in several areas yesterday. Could be a loooonnnggg season.

Jon - I couldn't agree with you more. Even though the record might not show it this year, our program is in a better state now than where we were last year. Even though most fans don't like to admit it KF is right, sometimes it just comes down to execution. Yesterday was an example of that.

I agree with a lot of the breakdown. However we have never scored enough for college football standards. Again yesterday we scored 20 pts on offense against a team where we should score 35-42. Lot's of execution issues for sure but this a problem that occurs year after year (not being able to score).

It's not just execution (and I know you know that) but that it is exactly is hard to pin point - It's poor strategy and coaching (at times) and lack of talent ( at other times)... is the what I can attempt to deduct.

These "horizonal" passes are often 4 to 9 yard gains these are like run plays.. We big ten fans love that kind of production between the tackles. The bias against them is born out of thick ankle ground and pound myopia

Does NIU really have the best offensive line we will see this year? I agree on the QB..But how does a MAC team recruit and develop a better offensive line than a Big10 team? What I take away from this game is that even though we are better than last year despite losing at home to a MAC team. We have MAC level talent, poor game day coaching and that is unacceptable due to the facilities ,salaries and support this program receives. It is incredible to me that this is acceptable to any Iowa fan. We can't fire KF,but we can and should fire Barta for his stupidity.

What is our losing streak now?

Johnny Website, I agree with you here. As tough of a pill as it was to take yesterday, I still am optimistic this season. Not as optimistic as I was, but if this team can continue to grow and get better (and they have room to do hat the next two weeks), they could still beat some teams as the year goes on.
I am still optimistic enough to say 7-8 wins isn't a super stretch.
Btw, Northern Illinois is not a bad team and should not be viewed as a cupcake as many negative naysayers will have you believe.

Not sure I agree with this, our new QB makes worse decisions than our last one that is for sure..

Also the only silver lining is when the team goes 3-9 and KF is shown the door....

It seems that the other team knows and is able to anticipate what play we are going to run..Especially our running plays. The linebackers and safeties were always there even though the play looked well blocked initially and would limit the damage. Then of course we shoot our own foot with bad execution..Bullock not concentrating and making an easy catch on that screen to get a first down and Iowa out of deep territory.. Our punter horribly shanking a a kick...Blown coverage by our d backs..etc

Not prepared for the fake punt.

By the way, did anyone notice that on both the long bombs the WRs thad to turn 180 degrees because the ball was thrown to the wrong side of the route? Good job by receivers. They had to slow down and turn around to adjust to the ball.

Fix this and wow!

I'm gonna add this - nobody has said this...I did not see Iowa's WRs getting separation very often. Yes there were a few times but they were covered up pretty well a large portion of the day.

Wall Clouds have no silver lining and with the lack of an outside pass rush by which this team is plagued, there are plenty of Wall Clouds on the horizon.

KF should have known that and gone after every JUCO DE in the country. But, instead he thought they could go with this group of undersized DTs with middling athleticism and NO quickness.

I did notice that, and the balls were both way under thrown. Contrast that with Lynch dropping balls into tight windows perfectly most the day and you can really see the gap in talent at QB. No wonder no team or coach respects the deep ball when they play Iowa. We can't execute it. That bomb on 3rd and 1 was about as bonehead a call as you can make with Weismann avg 5 YPC.

Breaking down the video? LOL, right coach!

You mean you drunkenly and angrily pushing rewind on your DVR. I'm sure that's a solid analysis right there Lombardi.

There's a reason Lynch is a Heisman candidate and Rudock is not (at the point, at least *wink*). It's because HE IS A GOOD QB!!!

Riddle me this one, football gawd... Had the 3rd and 1 pass been completed for a TD (and it very nearly was), would you still be on here beaching bout the "bonehead" call? If you answer yes to that Q, then you are either a fibber, a bonehead, or entirely too entrenched in your KirFer hatred to be able to make rational thoughts.

When the team has not executed for 7 straight losses, the coach has to take the brunt of the blame.
