The Keys to Victory for this Hawkeye Team

First off, I would like to say hello. I have been reading Hawkeye Nation posts for awhile now, but this is the first time that I have actually posted on here. I think this years team can be a good one if these following things happen in games.
  • Field Position: We have to keep the ball out of our end. That means no drives stalling inside of our own 30 yard line
  • Touchdowns: This team has to score 6 whenever they get in the red zone. Against good teams, getting only 3 points in the red zone kills you
  • Basics: Iowa cannot have mental breakdowns during the B1G season. This team is not good enough (in my opinion) to overcome mental lapses such as defensive breakdowns, numerous penalties, and turnovers (i.e. picks at the end of the game...)
  • Confidence: This year's Iowa team has to have confidence. After a rough 4-8 season last year, confidence is key. I feel like a win this weekend pushing them to 3-1 would really help in that category especially with the B1G season just over the horizon.
  • Mix up the run game just a little bit: I think Iowa should run the rock with MW for awhile, and when the defense tires and is on their heals, hit them with Canzeri, Bullock, or even Daniels and maybe they could bust a long one for six.
Again, I am new to this whole posting thing, but these five things in my opinion are the key to Iowa's success this year. I hope to see a packed Kinnick on Saturday! I will be there cheering on our Hawks from section 109! Go Hawks!

Very nicely done, man. I think you show some good insight into the Iowa program...thanks!

welcome to the fourm. By the way, a new poster's point of view is just as valid as anyone elses' so don't be shy.

If he hawks could do 1 more thing well, and if they did it, it would have a dramatic effect.

- Get open and catch the f----- ball. (GO+CTFB)

If Ruddock keeps playing the way he is and the running game stays strong I think we are going to surprise a lot of teams this yr in the big ten. GO HAWKS!

Nice Post. Key points one and five help make this game the biggest offensive show of the year for the Hawks.

Rushing - 50 carries for 300 yards. MW gets about 25, Ruddock gets 7, I have no idea how the other 18 get divided up amongst the other 3 RBs. I think we see a monster run for a TD - 30 or 40 yards, possibly Daniels. This brings the Yds/carry up to 6. Rushing provides two TDs including the monster run on the ground and one by Rudock.

Passing: 20/28 for 240 yards. Powell and Smith both have big gains on one of their receptions getting the yds/rec over 10 for the first time this year. Lots of 6 yard receptions. The TEs account for 8 receptions including one for a TD.

MM makes all of his PATs and kicks a 24 yard FG.

Defense plays good for the most part. Two interceptions and a fumble recovery. One of the turnovers results in a TD by the D. The Broncos look one dimensional. One of the safeties bites on play action early on which results in the Broncos' only offensive score. The line looks solid and plays their gaps well holding WMU to double digits in their running game.

Special teams gets burned on a reverse during one of the kickoffs resulting in the Broncos' other score. Punting is consistent but not spectacular. Two of three punts are downed inside of the 20.

Iowa easily wins TOP and is +2 in turnovers.

Iowa 31, WMU 14.

I think in most of those points you state the obvious.

But to be honest, I am damn impressed that you used the correct spelling of the word "whole" in your analysis.

Nice first post. It's always good to have new posters. I like the points you make for the most part. I do have one additional thing I would like to see from this team. If we can string together 2 or 3 more wins in a row can we start to get back some of the swagger that we've had for a large part of the last 30 years. I think if we win these next few games our confidence gets sky high and that helps us at least for the beginning of the games. It used to be in the not to distant past that everyone we played didn't feel like they would lose but they knew we were going to be in a dogfight. I'm not sure if that has backed off because we haven't done real well or maybe it's Kirk Ferentz trying to keep everybody on an even keel.
