the hand-wringing over the Syracuse-Duke call

good god...these guys should watch some Big Ten games. They'd find 100 calls at least as bad as this "defining" charge/block call they're all ruminating over.

By far, the flagrant 1 foul on Duke might be the worst call of the year.

Nobody is talking about it because Duke won but it was awful. If any call during that game should have sent a coach flying moot the floor, this should have been the one.... Not a 50/50 block charge call.

They are not 50/50 block charge calls any longer. They are about 95% Block and 5% charge calls now.

^ this is what I learned from the Nigel Hayes-McCabe block-charge thread, if the rules now say the defensive players feet must be "firmly in place" then this is what is going to happen.

And if that is the case, just do away with the charge call and go to a no call-block call. The offensive player can initiate contact and the official judges whether there is a block or incidental contact.

blocking every time everywhere except at the end of the game at Cameron. should have been a no call and let the players decide the outcome

horrible ending

good idea... Lets just send the refs to the showers with a minute left of tight games.... No need for em... Let the players decide it!!!

The big ten has the most inconsistent officiating I have ever seen

I was about to agree with you strongly... then thought about it and realized I watch 95% Big Ten basketball. I wonder how many of us are objective on this point.

This particular call may require a review of how to make a correct call. With so many questionable calls perhaps they should be reviewable. I know, another slowing down of he game but with few exceptions these are game-changing calls.

would it even matter?? In regards to this call jay Williams and digger disagreed on the call after having multiple looks at it.

If that was truely a charge then there is no such thing as blocking foul anymore the guy lead into his side when he got hit by him. Terrible call to let the dukies win what is flipping new.

I thought it was a good call.

The official said that Syracuse's C.J. Fair was not in an upward motion and that Duke's Rodney Hood had established position.

"By the strict interpretation of the rule, it was a player control foul in my opinion," the official said. "The defender was in position with his feet facing his opponent before Fair raised his hand. I think if you watch it, at least frame-by-frame, it was a player-control foul."

He added that the defender does have the right, after establishing legal guarding position, to slide to a side to cover an opponent, which Hood did
.

Referees made right call at end of Syracuse Orange-Duke Blue Devils game, official says - ESPN

I will add if you have to look at it frame by frame, it was a 50-50 call for the ref. Because it was away from the other 8 players and not under the rim, i feel like a call had to be made, whichever way the ref ultimately decided.

It was a tough play to call. What it wasn't was the worst call of the year in college basketball as Boeheim characterized it.

That's bull. By NOT making that call, the refs are making an equal and opposite impact on the game as they would if they make the call. A foul is a foul is a foul.

Maybe not the worst call of the year, but that absolutely should have been called a blocking foul according to the new rule. Defensive player clearly was still moving after offensive player was in motion to shoot. Boeheim was wrong when he said game was well officiated though. I haven't seen a well officiated college basketball game in a long long time.

I have no idea how anyone can say the call should absolutely go one way or the other.

I've seen expert analysts on both espn and Cbs differ in opinions. It was a tough call but I agree with the call.
