THE HAMM'S BEAR!

A long time ago, Zabel hosted a show with Glen Anderson, Maury John & Ralph Miller. In Cedar Rapids, it came on after the late night news on Sunday. They would show highlights of the previous week's games. The coaches would comment on the games. Zabel & the coaches would talk about the upcoming games. They had the bear in the background.

At the end of the show, Zabel & the other coaches, along with the Bear, would predict the winner of the upcoming games. Of course, Miller couldn't predict the Iowa games. In 1970, I though they were all nuts, when they all predicted that Iowa would beat Purdue to open the Big Ten schedule. It was my 17th birthday.

Beat the Bear! the good old days. My freshman year at Iowa 69-70. 14-0 in the big Ten and 100 points a game. then the Tip of a shot from half court and it was all over. Also the year of the riots and the closing of the University! Of course football was another story! Interesting times. Hard to believe because he was all over the place when doing a game but I do miss Zabel

Question for the OP. I remember the Hamm's commercials well and I do recall the Beat the Bear segments, to a degree. But was the BTB bear the Hamm's bear?
