the Fran effect

5 more fouls on Mich can be attributed to the end of game situation where Mich had to foul to stop the clock...that said, how many games did you feel like Hightower called it even against IA?

I think he is getting some respect for the program from the refs.

blaming refs is for people that dont understand what a game is about. pitchers must adapt to the strike zone. bball players must adapt to the physicality or lack to the calling of the game. as a coach and former collegiate athlete it makes me sick when people blame the refs in any sport.

I thought the new ref with the dark hair made some questionable calls, especially since Hightower and Sansere were prone to letting them play. But overall, I thought the game was called fairly.

Friend of mine just heard from his cousin who is close to the Big Ten Commissioner that the League warned the referees Not to irritate Fran under any circumstances. Apparently they don't want any more negative publicity concerning the pitiful performance of the officiating crews....

:D

I never notice the referees in game. OK, they might make 1-3 mistakes in a game. But compare that to the dozens made by players, coaches, and clock operators, and you can see that refs affect the outcomes of games very rarely.

Maybe make that many each time down the floor....refs in college basketball are flat out bad for the most part.

While I typically agree with you, Hightower is usually an exception. He's not very consistent most of the time, and he's one of the officials I can't stand for one primary reason: he likes being the center of attention, which is BAD for an official. Referees and umpires, good ones, are almost invisible in a game. Hightower is anything but, always making a show out of each call he makes, and if there haven't been many calls in a game, he starts making them out of the blue (and not just against Iowa). He is the poster child for bad officiating, but he gets a good national rep because he leans in favor of the Izzo's, Ryan's, etc. of the Big Ten.

You should have watched the UNI game.

i agree that a ref that wants attention is a bad ref. but they usually make mistakes both ways. also life isnt fair and neither are sports. adapt or lose (die). either you do enough to win or you dont. we did today and it was great to watch. and if fran keeps the team on this path i see a lot more days like today than days with losses.
