The first onside kick

The ref is standing in front of the ball, preventing the play from going forward. He moves aside, and within 8 seconds the kick is made and covered by Iowa. How can there be a delay of game when the ref himself is standing over the ball? I thought the play clock couldn't start until the ref moved out of the way? Am I missing something? Many reasons the Hawks put themselves in a position to lose this game before that, but that one is a head scratcher to me.

Stop making excuses. Its central Michigan and any win by less than 20 should be an embarrassment.

Someone correct me, but I don't think the play clock EVER started on that play...

The play clock starts as soon as he hands the ball to the kicker. It fell off the tee twice and the official had to stay there until they brought their holder over. I was calling for the delay of game way before it was called on the field. It was a correct call.

Haven't you ever seen the official stand over the ball in an Oregon game when the offense substitutes and they have to give the defense time to sub. This action doesn't stop the play clock. Very similar situation.

Wow...I was at the game on Saturday. I just now saw a replay of the onside kick from the TV angle...as much as it was a boneheaded coaching error, it was exacerbated by the horrible play by our front line on the hands team. Brutal...

i could be wrong, but i didn't sense any excuses in his question. he was asking a question about the rule for delay of game. you might be overreacting.

I thought a delay of game penalty could be declined?

The delay of game penalty would normally be called before the ball was kicked. This penalty was called after. I was at the game and forgot to record it. Thankfully I didn't. I normally don't ***** about officals but this game was a zoo. 9 on Iowa for 109 yards to 3 on CMU for 20 and there was quite a few no calls that would have went against CMU. HOWEVER, Iowa had plenty of chances to get ahead earlier in the game. The game is over now focus on bringing Floyd back home!

This.

Delay of game is a dead ball foul that can't be declined. The play officially didn't happen.

I have seen teams decline a delay of game penalty because the team that took the delay did it on purpose to give the punter more room to punt (if they are inside midfield). Then the defense declined the penalty to make it more difficult for the punter to keep it in the field of play.

Yes, but if Iowa declined the delay of game penalty it would have just been a re-kick at the same line of scrimmage. By declining the penalty, Iowa would not have been awarded the recovery on the first onside because it is a dead ball foul.

Right and then they re-kick from the same spot. If Iowa declined the delay penalty, they wouldve just kicked from the same spot instead of 5 yards back.
