The emotional coach myth

I've read a lot about how some wish Kirk Ferentz would "show some emotion once in awhile" or words to that effect. Some even wish that he would be more like Paul R.

How emotional on the sideline was Tom Landry for those old enough to remember him? KF looks like Paul R compared to Landry in terms of emotional demonstrations. Tom Landry was a winner and won two Super Bowls for the Cowboys and noone cared about how much emotion he was showing.

What happens is when a coach is underperforming according to expectations then their personality starts to wear on people. You see the Hawks lose to Minny and see KF just standing there chewing his gum then you start to think his personality has something to do with. Listen, had we won that game and went 8-4 instead of 7-5 then I bet there would have been much less mention if any at all about his emotionless demeanor.

And Paul R.? Right now, his jumping all up and down on the sidelines and teary locker room speeches "I am so proud to be....." is charming because ISU is winning more than expectations. You think they have a couple of bad seasons then their fan base isn't going to think those demonstrations of emotions are weak and cheesy. Darn right they will.

The only thing that matters is winning. Whether they show emotion in incidental.

Why would they be complaining? Tom was winning championships and was an innovator did you know that Tom Laundry invented the 4-3. Norm should personally thank him. Is this thread for real?

KF isn't even in the same realm of Tom Laundry.

My bad. Thought this was going to the football forum.

Not comparing KF to Landry in accomplishment. Just saying the whole notion that you need to have a coach be emotional to succeed is hogwash.

I don't care how emotional or animated my coach is. What I do care about is that the players are motivated for each game. It seems like Iowa has at least one game each year where the players just seem to be going through the motions.
 
While a good argument it is flawed. Landry coached in the NFL, KF coaches in college. College football is played with and affected a lot more by emotion and momentum than the NFL game.
 
Agreed. I dont want or need some screaming baboon just because he can spit and scream at the refs. I'd rather have a KF or ShaChefsky (ha) any day of the week. So because I can scream and yell I am a good coach? If that was the case why wouldnt all successful leaders just scream and yell? Presidents, CEO's, etc. just scream and yell, cool. DUMB
 
paul rhoads is wearing thin on me! he's like that office idiot that lands 1 account a day and shoves it in the acheived veterans face non stop.
i think his crowd surfing in the parking lot is unprofessional at the least. does he really want to see every coach that beats the clowns crammin it up his arse? i mean that be like arse crammed 80% of the season most yrs!
 
the emotional thingy is for dullards.

Watch football. The majority of coaches aren't playing air guitar on the sidelines, or going Pelini.......
 
Funny thing is if your coach did what CPR did you yahooo's would be praising him. :rolleyes:

This thread is so full of stupid its hard to believe. Kirk Ferentz is very, very, very far from being emotionless, quite the opposite in fact. The thing that some of the harelipped knuckle dragging half-breeds on this board fail to understand is that Kirk Ferentz conducts himself in a dignified and professional manner. Just because he doesn't jump around and scream like a fool on the sidelines doesn't mean that he doesn't care or isn't trying. You people disgust people like me but personally I couldn't care less about you.

all the clowns have hung their hat on the guitar jammin Rhoads....cant wait until he stabs the daggar into the yellow and cardinal heart when he leaves for brighter horizons....in which he will fail when he gets there. he'll have to be better than 6-6 before he can body surf into the parking lot!
 
I don't care how animated KF is on the sidelines, but what bothers me is that the team can't seem to match our opponent's intensity when we're playing underdogs like Minnesota or ISU. THAT is the real problem here, IMO. Every game is as "just another game", while some of our opponents are viewing it as an actual RIVALRY game.
