The 4th and 2 Play

This is where Purdue really won the game. Brohm rolled the dice. He had complete confidence that they play dialled up would work. It was similiar to Paul Chryst choosing to punt in the fourth quarter when near midfield and trailing. He had complete confidence that his defense could stop us, and that the offense had a winning drive in them when they would need it.

Brohm would have heavily been second guessed had he passed the 47 yarder and the play not worked. Instead, he looked like a genious. It wasn't quite as dramatic as the 2010 Wisconsin fake punt but just as effective. Bottom line. Sometimes you need a little Irish Whiskey in your blood to win big football games. And a pair of brass stones.

Hockaday shot the wrong gap...and Hesse...lost all contain...they came down hard on him. If you watch the play...our LB needed to get wider and meet him at the line of scrimmage...but instead took the wrong angle.

strictly speaking, going for 2 in the 3rd qtr of a one score game, and failing, is what cost us the game. had we simply kicked the extra point both times (as the "book" says you should) purdid would have had their own choice to make of having to go for a td to win or a fg to tie. bad game management by our guys. period.

I thought the second time we went for two we had a one point lead. It's a no brainer to go for two in that situation.

If Kirk doesn't have the guts to go for it on fourth and goal and takes the points, we never get the lead and this is an entirely different conversation. If people are going to question going for two they also have to give him credit for not taking three and going for six.

I started the post criticizing the first 2 pt conversion attempt because it wasnt needed at the time, low percentage for Iowa and most teams, and if you miss which is highly likely it puts you even more behind the strange math of football scoring in that the almost freely easy PAT is very important.

Your point in the first two sentences is correct it was a no brainer to go for 2 but ask yourself why????? Because we didnt kick the easy PAT after that earlier 3rd qtr TD. It becomes a necessity to now go for 2.

I have no problem with KF going on 4th down because Purdue was scoring, because if we miss it PU has the ball on the 2 yard line or even the 1 yard line if it is a run, then you trust your defense to get a stop and PU punts and you start over on offense at maybe the PU 40 or 35 yard line

Listen, when you dont get the point after a TD it opens up all kinds of math scoring problems.

Fact of the matter is this. After taking the lead by 1point we couldn't hold it. It wouldn't matter if it had been 10-9 or 21-20. We were up a point, shit the bed on offense penalties or not gave them the ball back on the fifty and they did exactly what we all knew was going to happen. I still say we should of just let them score a TD and at least had clock time to have a chance at game winning drive of our own or tie up.

It was ironic that the defense started to settle in a bit the instant he went for two the first time. The announcers were suggesting that Kirk was panicking a bit because Purdue was scoring every possession.

Bennetti should stick to baseball

Yep the defense started to get some stops, things were looking manageable then PU hit that long bomb or whatever.

Bad day for Iowa's pass defense as they gave up 6 huge plays or penalties besides the various other completioins.

Not only did Hockaday miss the tackle, again, he effectively blocked another player from making the tackle. Welch, Jones or even Neimann would be better at mlb.

I need to watch the replay but it sure seemed like there were chances for Iowa to make the stop there. Once they got the first down there I knew the Hawks were in big trouble. You usually get one chance to make a play and if you whiff on it, it comes back to bite you.

Our linebackers are not good. They are nonexistent, and that is due to poor recruiting. KF cannot recruit worth a shit, and he, and his entire staff are routinely outcoached game in and game out. Brohm is a good coach, and made us look silly with his play calling yesterday. We, on the other hand, have Brian Ferentz. Did anyone see how Brohm took advantage of Moss yesterday? He did the same thing last year with Ojemudia. You think KF and BF are smart enough to take advantage of other teams weaknesses? Nope.

Purdue was on my radar in August as a team to watch for. Why, cause I like Brohm as a coach. They represented well in their bowl game. They played Wisconsin as tough as anyone last year. I was questioned on these boards and those questions were justified when they lost to Northwestern and started 0-3. Now they look like they will beat Wisconsin and finish second in the west. And I bet they are kicking themselves for throwing the opener against Northwestern away because of their turnovers.

It’s really as simple as this and horrible game day coaching. These two combined are the reason we continue to go 7-5 against one of the weakest conferences in college football.

Purdue is a up and coming team but it’s not like they’re an SEC team in regards to size and speed....:BUT Brohm schemes to fit his players and he actually schemes to beat an opposing team. Purdue gave us a few gifts yesterday, Brohm going full Kirk mode and running the ball when they could pass at will, and the turnovers.

Back to recruiting, our staff develops players. It just takes 3-4 years for them to become NFL ready. Then these players are wasted by a scheme that doesn’t take advantage of their skill level. Specifically offense

And how badly do we miss Wadley? We don’t have that home run threat in the backfield. And Stanley still can’t hit a deep pass so teams are back to stacking the box....like every year

Going for a TD over taking FG imo are completely different scenarios over kicking xp or going for 2.

You hit on two major weaknesses of the KF program. This is the internet, so people will gut you on the slightest over embellishment but recruiting has been a major weakness of Kirk's program. He refuses to play the recruiting game, not the dirty $$$ one, but rather to inflate the kids ego and really sell them on the program. And once you have them, you have them. Make them put in the time and hard work like you would anyone in the Iowa program. Which I think is an elite level developmental program. But we continually fail at getting 4 and 5 star recruits that you need to consistently beat the PSUs, UMs, UWs and OSUs of the B1G. Yes we get a few now and then but not enough to contend.

Secondly, Kirk relies too much on his system and doesn't allow more talented players to blaze the trail. Why not overuse Fant or other studs? If it means winning football games that's all that really matters in the end. This is a game people. Winning is at that matters baby. I couldn't care less if we have 50/50 balance on the offensive side. Is it beautiful to see? Yes. But an ugly win is a win. I'm just sick of being the liberals/Democrats of the NCAA. We lose, but at least we still have our pride and values. Meanwhile we fall further and further into irrelevancy as a national program. This is why the anti-Ferentz people won't go away because we'd rather risk 5 years of 4-8 seasons for the chance to eventually get it right and have 3 years of dominance with a coach that eventually get picked up by the NFL or another elite NCAA program. We're sick of the mediocrity and random people telling us, "you guys are always decent at least."

I'm ready for a change from destination coaches. At this point I would love to hire a dynamic up and comer that would compete for the best players and not turn into a wallflower in the biggest games, even if they move onward and upward after five years. Lute, George Raveling, and Vivian Stringer would all be definitions of stepping stone coaches. They moved on. But they didn't shortchange us when they were here.

This would require a certain vision from the athletic director. A vision our current guy doesn't have. Not when he's extending contracts into the middle of the next decade.

we did 36-35. but had we not gone for 2 the previous time, our lead would have been 37-35 and we kick the extra point and we're up 38-35 prior to purdid's last drive. so, they spent almost 3 minutes of game time knowing they only needed 25 or so yards to kick a field goal to win. had they been presented with the choice of having to score a td to win, perhaps they manage their last possession differently and perhaps they end up with a fg to tie and we go to OT.
