Here's the synopsis as I see it:
1) If KF wanted to create a QB controversy he's got it. Put in the backup for one series and CJ looked good and threw a TD pass (receiver dropped it but it was there/perfect). Completely unnecessary to pull Rudock and now we're going to hear about it all year when something goes wrong.
2) Ball State is a good example of how college football has changed. MAC teams winning isn't a huge surprise. However, they had a LOT of help to be in that position. See #3.
3) This was a strange game: Iowa had several bounces that completely changed the look of this game. The fumble turning into a TD (could've been down right there). The "roughing the punter" call (btw, they need to change that rugby style kick rule . . . that was junk). The non-called pass interference calls (especially the 2 back to back). Wow. Oh, did anyone mention the THREE missed field goals? A bunch of missed opportunities. Scherff goes down and within a few plays so does Davis. (thankfully they both came back) And yet somehow we win. Within 5 minutes of defeat. KF doesn't usually do that.
4) Jake looks like a QB that has to figure out the long ball. He can manage the game and stay cool under pressure. But if we're going to win big games he needs to figure out the 15-20 throws quick.
5) We knew our LB's would be a soft spot, but Spearman scares me. Has anyone else noticed he seems to be the one running behind the other team when they make a big play? Hope this is short term and he learns quickly because he is the biggest liability (Laudermilk is a close second). Announcers mentioned picking on Laudermilk if they were coaching. I hate to say I agree.
6) Obviously the FG's are an issue. Is practice going to help? I remember KF saying in practice that the kicking game is still in question. Now I know why.
I look at this as one of those times to learn without the expense of a loss. But man was it ugly! "Where's the Tylenol?"
