That Was a Masterpiece

It was nice to relax at the end of a game. We should have a big advantage inside pretty much every game the rest of the season. Win Sunday and Iowa really has the inside track to 2nd place...but we have to win Sunday.

Iowa played a complete game, and did to a depleted Michigan team what they should have done.....destroyed them. It was a great, great game.

I really, really hope Fran keeps his rotations like they were tonight. There is NO REASON you don't have White and Uthoff playing 35 MPG. There is no reason Gesell & Jok don't get 30 MPG. Great game by Fran in letting his best players log the vast majority of the minutes tonight, hopefully going forward his rotation looks like it did tonight. (Sans Gabe and Woody, play the hotter guy more that particular night)

Gesell 31 min
Jok 28 min
White 34 min
Uthoff 36 min

Subs
Uhl 10 min
Ogs 12 min
Clemmons 10 min

MSU has a pretty good chance at 2nd too. 2nd or 3rd is so much better than 4th or 5th this year as far as tournament seeding goes.

Where all the haters tonight? Fran wants to know if y’all like apples.

It's not often I get something wrong but when I do, I'm glad it's my prediction for a Hawkeye loss.

Then again, who could have predicted such sanity from Fran with the rotations and substitutions:
Starters played 156 minutes (78%) - an average of 31 minutes, each. Consequently,
- Every starter in double figures.
- Woody wasn't yanked after 2 fouls and got in a groove to play the best game of his career.
- Uthoff woke up from his 3 week nap.
- The chemistry was boiling with the fluency of the zone and offense, especially the passing. It was beautiful.
(It also didn't hurt that Michigan shot like crap.)

I love apples. I'm no hater. I AM the most interesting poster on the board.

All I can say is; Take that Michigan, you last second Higdon flippers. You will feel the wrath of the Hawks (except fb) for the next 4 years. We will break you in every single sporting event (but not fb).
May you never taste success in the arena of sport in any athletic contest vs Iowa for the next 4 years! (again, no promises in fb)

That was beautiful. Everyone played well, and with lots of poise, especially when Michigan threatened to get back into the game. The Hawks had the answer every time.

I can't remember the last time I've seen such flawless execution for 40 minutes from an Iowa team.

It was a fantastic game for Iowa.

One word of caution, though, is I don't always think things will go this well. We seemed to get every 50-50 ball and made a number of long-range 2 pt jumpers (which I'm not a fan of us taking, but it is obviously nice when they go in.)

Things were never as bad as they seemed the past couple weeks. They probably aren't as good as they seemed last night, although I think last night was closer to the true ability of this team.

We shall see. They need to keep things on an even keel and keep striving to play their peak basketball at the end of the year.

Michigan State has a 1 game lead on us. Below are their remaining games that could go either way IMO.

Ohio State
@ Michigan
@ Illinois
@ Wisconsin
@ Indiana

I just looked and Maryland only has 3 or 4 more "either way" type games as well. Right now I think it's Iowa, Michigan State and Maryland battling for seeds 2 through 4 in the BTT. Of course everything could look completely different in a week or 10 days.

Proud of the team. Played with poise and confidence. Whitey had some attitude. Personally, I liked to see it from him as I think he sometimes disappears. The refs were too hard on him with the two Ts IMHO although they were technically correct calls. They could call Ts all day everyday in this league.

Michigan has been an interesting match up for the hawks over the past couple years. They play small and are so guard oriented. In years past they used the speed and guard play and exploited the Hawks.

This year with out 2 of their top scoring guards playing, the Hawks took advantage of our size and it was a mismatch in our favor. We out boarded them 33-17 and we had all 5 starters in double figures.

We obviously played well and I don't want to take another away from the guys on a well deserved road win but I think the fact that they were without 2 of their top players, this was a good match up for the hawks.

Not changing from my opinion that we are still a bubble team.

I'm still concerned about any match up against an opponent with a big front line, where Iowa can't simply have their way inside like they did with Michigan last night, in which case they may have to rely on being able to make outside shots. Still, the team played as well as I've seen in a long time, so whatever they worked on since the Wisconsin game, they need to keep doing it.

IMO, this team just needs to keep pounding the paint and be opportunistic from outside (in other words, don't start jacking up a bunch of 3's, but take them when they have open looks). If they get beaten by a better team, so be it, but they should keep going to their strengths like they did last night.

Regarding that 3 game losing streak, two were against Wisconsin, so no big surprise there. The other loss against Purdue stung a bit, but it turns out that the Boilers aren't exactly chopped liver either, and it was a road game without White playing most of the way, so I took those 3 losses with a grain of salt.

I don't think we play another team with a big front line in the regular season. And I agree on the 3 losses...never really concerned me much.

I'm not a hater, but Michigan may be one of the worst teams the Hawks have faced all year. Any more injuries & they may have to forfeit the rest of their games. Of course the Wolverines will beat Iowa in the conference tournament.
