First of all, a big thank you to Mel, Zach and Devon. They brought Iowa BB back from the dead and made it relevant and exciting.
I'm certainly no basketball expert, but a few observations going forward:
1. We still need more athleticism. Somehow the recruiting has to get a little better. Tennessee was the stronger, more athletic team tonight.
2. I'm really starting to think that Fran plays too many players. Go with an 8 man rotation or 9 tops. If a younger player can't make the top 8 as a freshman, red shirt him. Playing 11 kids is too tough on the players and the coaches, and makes it hard for kids to get in a rhythm. When they ARE in a rhythm, they get taken out of the game. I don't think playing 10 or 11 works at this elite level of basketball.
3. I think Mike Gesell is a fine player, but I still question him at the point. I see him as an off guard. We need better play at the point next season.
4. Woodbury and Jok could be monsters next year. In retrospect, maybe Fran didn't play them enough this season.
5. Fran, please don't give up on Clemmons. He is quick and can defend. I think he could help us next year.
This season was a huge success from every objective perspective. Fran can coach and will learn from this year going forward. I think the future is bright for Iowa BB.
