yeah, 50 passes in a game is never going to happen

It's actually already happened quite a few times. Drew Tate did it (55 attempts against Florida in the '06 Outback Bowl). Scott Mullen did it (51 attempts against Minny in '99), and even threw SIXTY passes against Indiana in '99. Hartlieb also did the feat twice (51 against NC State in '88), including a 60-attempt game against Indiana in '88. He also came close a time or two. And Beutjer threw up 47 passes against Indiana in '00 (there seems to be a trend there, doesn't there?).

I hope Beutjer's passes vs. Indiana were better then his bball shots when he walked on haha

My hope is 50/50 perfect balance. When we do that, we usually are kicking butt. If the running game can get it going, the offense will be tough to defend this year.

KF's teams do well when all of the phases work well together, and don't have to rely on any one thing too much. Good D, good field position, good special teams, and offensive balance will get it done. I think this team can do it.

If we are throwing that much we are in trouble. Those games you mentioned (a tleast the Ferentz era ones), we were in trouble. Our style of play does not mix well with 50 pass attempts. Extends the game, increases turnover chances, harder to play field position, can't run play-action, ect...

If you throw that much you have to run a short/check-down passing game, that stresses timing and accuracy. It's the only way to control the ball. Lots of screens, crossing routes, ect... We don't run that type of passing scheme, nor is Stanzi's strength the short passing game. Stanzi is at his best attacking the field vertically. Running the ball will really help Stanzi. He is not a check-down, high completion percentage QB. If Stanzi is throwing the ball 50 times we most likely lose.

wonder how many times Tate threw it per game when we were out of RBs due to injury - i think it was 2004 - after the offense was retooled to primarily a passing attack?

Tate tossed it a lot. I think Tate's talents were better suited for that type of offense than Stanzi's. We went to a more ball-control passing attack. Tate was very accurate on the short/under-neath stuff and struggled throwing an accurate deep ball. Stanzi throws a great deep ball, but struggles a little more underneath, in my opinion. Tate also came out of wide-open shotgun/timing TX high-school offense. I'm not sure I want Stanzi running that 2004 offense. I like Stanzi off play-action, rolling out, attacking the field boundaries and the field vertically.

If we can run the ball, forcing 8 in the box, then our WR's and Stanzi's beautiful touch on deep balls will absolutely destroy man coverage. If we run the ball average this year, we'll be a very good offensive unit.

fortunately for iowa, he was accurate on at least one deep ball! :) (and i don't recall him not being a good long-ball thrower, but that was several years ago.....)
