Thad Matta advice to Archie Miller (Dayton Coach) - Maybe Fran should listen

Just heard this on the CBS Broadcast, but really seems to maybe apply to Iowa's problems as well.

When Dayton was going through a losing streak in the season, Miller called Matta for advice. Matta told him to "Back off, it's not the players, it's you."

Miller stopped being so hard on the players, cut them slack, reduced practice time. And the team responded well.

I think maybe this advice could apply to Iowa's situation.

Because you know how long they practiced and how tough Fran was on them?

I'm wondering if Thad now regrets giving this advice.

I think it just helps to hit the reset button when going through struggles. Through all the distractions I think it was just hard for Iowa to do so properly during their slump.

Two years ago they had Gatens. Last year they had May. For the first time in many seasons we had 3 seniors who played significant minutes. None of them were leaders.

Fran backed off a lot in the final weeks. Demeanor changed on the sidelines. Didn't help.

And I'm certain Fran even talked about this in an interview that it was time for him to let up as the team wasn't responding.

However, the team still didn't respond. I really don't think they responded unil the Tenn. game. It just happened that our best player had his worst or 2nd worst game of the year after being a consistent performer all year and he didn't have enough talent around him, even when the bench played out of their mind.

Look at the background...does that look like a player happy with how their coach is acting?

White is looking at McCabe and even if he were looking at Fran all he would see is the back of his head. To say that one split second snapshot in time can capture the attitude of a player is just dumb.

I don't thing you can put the blame for how the season ended on anyone thing. In this thread I don't recall anyone writing about the amount of games over the off season. Iowa played in the NIT until the end of April 2013. White made the USA World University team and played up to the time the team headed to Europe for six games in August. This season teams could begin practice earlier. Add in the prime time league games to the basketball played. I think there was a fatigue problem compounded by wasted travel to Indiana followed by too many games in to short a period of time. Much of that time was spent traveling. It maybe why Iowa had trouble finishing games. It definitely can affect shooting.

I agree that leadership was a void. Guards generally are the Generals on the court. Neither Marble, Geselle, Ogleby, or Clemmons exhibited signs of leadership.

McCabe isn't even in front of White. Pay attention.
