Texas already in talks with Big Ten (link)

Anybody following Texas message boards? What are they saying about this?

I won't get my hopes up until this unnamed source is identified, and/or somebody confirms this story.

If Rittenberg says they're legit, they are. That being said, there's obviously a lot to think about on both sides.

Holy crapoli.

From Adam Rittenberg's post: "Would Texas only join as part of a package deal with A&M or Oklahoma?"

The Big Fourteen:

Steers and Bulls Division
Texas
A&M
Oklahoma
Iowa
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Illinois

Rust Belt Division
tOSU
PSU
Michigan
MSU
Indiana
Purdue
Northwestern

The reactions I've read from Texas fans are universally negative. Like "people will be physically harmed in Austin if Texas goes to the Big Ten" negative. I actually think Texas to the Big Ten makes some sense for them, but they won't do it if the fan base is completely opposed.

And I was having a hard time figuring how a West division could be configured to rival the East division. I would say this does it, and then some.

Where is his Bathia for his take on this? Until he says something i will wait to comment. Waiting to see what he says is best because you know the opposite will probably happen

Steers and Bulls Division? Somebody please come up with a better idea than that

I think adding more than one team is a bad idea. Unfortunately there is the Texas legislature to deal with (which may require Texas to bring A&M along if it leaves) and the Oklahoma rivalry complicates things. I think there is zero chance of the 14 team scenario actually happening.

As weird as it is to imagine Texas playing a full Big Ten slate plus Oklahoma and A&M every year (assuming we only add Texas), I guess many Iowa fans would have no problem playing ISU and Nebraska every nonconference season, which is very similar (at least when Nebby is decent).

I've read a lot of things that weren't actually that negative at all. Not necessarily "OMG YES PLZ" positive, but hardly "let's start a riot" negative.

THIS
is to the SEC as

Iowa
is to
Iowa State

It would be so great to watch the SEC shrivel back into the nothingness of where it came...

There is still no chance. The Big 10 merely asking Texas is nothing. They would be stupid not to ask.

The obvious reality the entire time is that Texas would never, ever want to join the Big 10.

This gets linked all the time these days, but there's a reason for it.

The Big Ten Expansion Index: A Different Shade of Orange FRANK THE TANK’S SLANT

Directly to your point (that Texas "would never, ever want to joint the Big 10):

...every single Big Ten school makes $10 million per year more than Texas does on TV revenue...

and

The potential entry of Texas into the Big Ten would include membership in the CIC, which opens up a whole new level of academic research opportunities for the school that simply doesn’t exist in the Big 12.

so

If moving to another conference would (1) make more money for the athletic department AND (2) improve the academic standing of the university, you’ve made quite a powerful argument to the Texas university president.

I'm not saying Texas to the Big Ten is likely (I still think no expansion is the probable end result of all these talks), but it would obviously be a good move for the Big Ten and there definitely ARE reasons why Texas would want to make the switch.

Perhaps you could provide some explanation for your conclusion, instead of just saying there is no chance (which adds nothing to the discussion).

I meant that the responses I've seen today were almost completely negative. I should have been clearer. Of course usually the immediate reactionary comments aren't at all indicative of any consensus, so it will be interesting to see how Longhorn comments evolve in the coming days and weeks.

One way or the other, the Big XII is falling apart.

Let's say the Big Ten takes Missouri, Pac 10 takes Colorado. Big XII has to take TCU and Houston? That means no increased TV sets for the Big XII, no new recruiting areas opened up. Bad for the Big XII, bad for Texas.

Big XII has a bad television deal = Texas has a bad television deal.

Texas may want to get out of the Big XII while they can, and Big Ten/Pac 10 expansion talk may be the best time for them to jump ship.
