Terry Stross - FoxSports

Rewatched the FoxSports broadcast on the BTN.

Noticed that they stated 'Dace Richardson' starting at right guard, yet clearly he was not on the field as they announced that.

And very nice reference to Terry Stross.

Then, really liked how Dick Stockton called us 'the underdog' Hawkeyes, early on, but never went back to that misnomer.

Total yards 435 to 135? LOL! :D

I think the other guy said "Marvin McKnight" the first time instead of McNutt. Someone must have corrected him during commercial, though, because he eventually got it right.

C'mon guys, piling on misspeaks, particularly a week after they have been thouroughly discussed, is pretty lame.

If we are going to apply this rule evenly, why no hate on Kirk for his Wake Forest comment? This is worse than being a grammar Nazi.

I don't usually care much either but they kept making the same mistakes over and over. I think I heard "Terry Stross" at least three times. He corrected himself at first so it's not like he didn't know the kid's real name.

The thing that really stood out was the huge gap between Herbstreit's commentary and the ESPN half time show and Fox's. They were awful.

I think being a nationally televised football announcer is a pretty sweet gig. Least you can do is learn how to pronounce the starting lineups. If you don't know Marvin McNutt's game, then you haven't even been paying attention to the Hawkeyes this year.

Oh noes someone who has to talk on TV for 4 straight hours made a mistake. Please, some of these guys have to know so much information just to be able to hold up for the 4 hours that it's no big deal if they mispronounce McNutt's or Ferentz' name. And they probably haven't paid much attention to the Hawks this year. These announcers fortes are not college football. I agree with Ghost.

Add me to that list, too.

Yeah, and just think, the announcers only had a month to learn the names.

Just like pointing out how lame these national media types are, with regard to Iowa and their potato farmers.

:D

What a crock we have to accept as 'professional' in this day and age. The bar is set so low it's unreal.

Agreed, have a bit of professionalism. It isn't like he is doing a game every night. He had a month to prepare, and in that month what does he have to do, learn about 60 names at the most?

That being said, I could not, nor could any of us do their jobs. The only thing we could do is maybe spend 4 hours of preparation learning names, and that is the only thing they DON'T do it seems. That to me is a lack of preparation, and a lack of professionalism. You don't see the good ones butchering names. Misspeaking is one thing, just plan old not knowing a name is another.

Acctually, Stockton and Davis did a professional football game two days before the Orange Bowl. They work a pro game every week. College is definately not their forte.

It is hard to criticize guys who do a bad job when they are asked once a year to do something they are not used to. That is why I have pateince with the guys here when I am at Hy-Vee and the checkout girl calls in sick, and they are forced to move there from their bagging station. I can't blame Deanvogs when he gets confused by the buttons, because I know the hardest thing he has to deal with on an ordinary day is a canvas bag.

Did anybody else who was at the game hear the stadium another call Moeaki, "Tony Milwaukee?" That's my favorite goof of all of them.

Nobody called in sick, this was on their schedule, and it doesn't take much to learn some names. Seriously Ghost, I am not talking about their ability to call the game, as that is a skill that none of us have. Learning names is anything anybody can do. Your analogy is ridiculous, as they KNEW they were doing this game, get some professionalism and do a few hours of prep, and get the names right please. If they don't prepare for games, between calling them, then seriously they work like 4 hours a week.

All I am saying is that you have never done their job, you don't know how to do their job, you don't know how they prepare for their job, and you seem to have no appriciation for how difficult the job is.

Gary Dolphin mumbles his way through half of the Hawkeye roster every week and that is his only job, yet no one gives him crap for that. Just get off of the announcers. This is a powerfully lame discussion, a discussion only salvaged by my mediation.

I have not criticized anything they do at all except for them to learn the freaking players names! You said you taught school, how long did it take you to learn 2 or 3 classrooms names? Not freaking hard here Ghost. So quit acting like I am asking them to be perfect and never misspeak, be aerospace engineers, put in an extra 40 hours of work a week. I am asking none of this. I am saying learn the players NAMES......wow I guess I just expect too much these days.

This is coming from a guy who no less than 2 weeks ago pounded some guy for misspelling on a thread... LOL ..working his way towards the 2010 awards !

by the way you misspelled thoroughly.

So then it's too much to ask that they also get the coaches name right? I'm pretty sure each of the half time guys called him Fur-enz at least twice. People are getting worked up because they think the mistakes are a reflection on the Hawks (are they worthy of attention?). The truth is, it just made the announcers/commentators look ill-prepared.

Actually I don't think it is a slight against Iowa at all. I think that the announcers just didn't do what they need to, and learn the players names and pronunciation. I guess maybe it is just a pet peeve of mine, that they don't do that one very simple thing.
