Talented players or good coaching?!!!

Before this season started, even optimistic supporters believed we could be significantly better but end up with a 5-7 or 6-6 record because of how tough our schedule looked. The Hawks added Ohio State & Wisconson back to their schedule and they play Nebraska on the road. In addition, four teams on our schedule would be rested and have two weeks to prepare for us coming off their bye week. The Hawks are the best four loss team in the country. The opponents we lost to have a combined W-L record of 39-3 - really 40-2 given the Wisconson/ASU fiasco. The Hawks played all the teams we lost to tough and with a break or two we could have won a couple of them.
You can see this team growing and gaining confidence every week. The Hawks have yet to play their best complete game. We beat the meatchickens despite four turnovers. The odds of winning any game when you have four turnovers are less than 20%. Talent and good coaching are the only things that can overcome that many turnovers. This team played three games in sweltering hot 125+ degree on field temps and this game against Michigan was the coldest game ever played in Kinnick stadium. Iowa accomplished this with a first year quarterback, a true freshman cornerback, a fullback turned running back, no recievers that could catch the ball, a terrible punter and three linebackers who the negative posters claimed all last year were just coach's pets who couldn't start on any other team in America. Amazing coaching or talented players?
The Hawks are young and deep. The young players will grow & improve in the off-season and they'll be better next year. Our last two recruiting classes were made up of almost all three star players with a few four & two stars. Prior to that, most of our recruiting classes were made up of one and two star players with a few three & four stars added in. Recruiting has improved and there's some young talent waiting to play. The next few years are going to be fun because we have great coaches, great players and for the most part great fans.

Still drinking at this hour? You know the recruiting services keep their information online. You might want to go back and take a look at the history of Iowa recruiting.

The difference is more about attrition than number of stars.

Just take the win bro. They looked great in the 3rd and 4th quarter which imho is the most important thing. They finished like men. Let them have the victory.

it's called..... the Big Ten sucks.

It makes me sad to say so.

I'm happy the hawks are winning again but I'd like to see them take advantage of this week division like Michigan State has the past 4 years.

I would say the Big10 is grossly underrated this year, but the bottom half sucks out loud and with Northwestern's implosion it still does suck on the whole. It makes it tough to get a grip on how good the top half really is...and by "top half" I mean the 3 good teams.

Not to take anything away from the efforts and results of this team because they have done a good job in getting things turned around this year. Also keep in mind, however, that we have been living on razor's edge with late game fumbles that rolled in our favor with NW and MI. Without those turnovers we could be singing a little bit different song. I understand that good defenses can cause fumbles but you still need some luck to have the ball bounce your way.

The Hawks have had a good year considering where they have been as of late. Let's hope they can put an explanation point on it next Friday and keep the momentum going.

Yes, but then you're discounting the luck Michigan received in the form of a pick 6 and other turnovers...if those don't happen Iowa possibly pitches a shutout...as so many would point out when we don't win,"That's football"...and I believe that's to be followed with -chomp- -snort-...

I would argue that the Legends division is much better than the Leaders. The leaders is 2 good teams and a bunch of junk, if Northwestern was in the Leaders they would be bowl eligible.

Iowa has had the toughest schedule this year, before the season a lot of us were thinking 5 wins. The fact that they have 7 with a shot at 8 I think is an accomplishment even though I still complain about losing to NIU.

i don't think you can say that we have much talent. some areas it's pretty thin. i'd give much more credit to the position coaches at this time for helping guys to develop and be in the right position to make a play.

That one won't stop hurting...30 yards from a game winning FG only to give it away at the end... Not to mention, how nice it would be to be their only loss 2 years in a row...especially after Desmond Howard said "Ball State is the best team Northern Illinois has played this year. Take conference affiliation out of it with Iowa and Purdue and what do you have?".

Given who we've played and the circumstances (including Nebby next Friday), this is a very tough year to get my head around how good, average, or mediocre we really are.

To a large degree KF is correct. That's football, and some losses are directly attributable to execution, or lack of.

A tough pill to swallow for those that have a visceral hatred of him, but Iowa football has always been tough to watch.

The plays that are being complained the most loudly about this year, by myself included, are KoK's plays. Maybe even KF's plays. No one really knows. I talked to a trainer after the game yesterday (I'm an insider, remember?) and asked why we checked off in to plays running the ball into 7-8 in the box. He laughed at me and told me that Ruddock can't check in to anything except left of right. Is that factual? Who knows? My point? No one really knows what's going on there, myself included. Nebby as an example. Problems with Bo. Likely didn't make it back to Lincoln until very early this morning. Equipment truck likely not back until mid morning tomorrow. Last two games, two tough games.

MSU, OSU and Wisconsin are top 15 caliber teams. BIG maybe not quite as bad as we thought. ASU will probably win the PAC 12. They would not win the BIG. Wisconsin got screwed in Tempe and would have pounded them at Camp Randall. Big 12 sucks. ISU, Kansas and West Virginia are horrible. Tex. Tech, Oklahoma and Texas are average. Baylor is pretty good with Okie state clearly the best team. Top 3 teams in the BIG are better than the top 3 in the Big 12. Freaking Duke will play FSU for the ACC title. FSU will be favored by 40 in that one. (unless QB is in Jail) ACC is no better than the BIG. So here we are again. The only league in the country, CLEARLY better than the BIG is the SEC, and they are clearly better than all the others, too.

Wisconsin was very lucky in recovering it all 3 times they put it on the carpet...the ball bounced their way all day. The ball bounced the way for Michigan most of the day as well, but it was clear that Iowa was the better team and did enough to finish them off.

Well put OP

The good
O$U
MSU
WI

The middling
NE
Iowa
Michigan (barely)
Penn State (barely)

The bad
Indiana
Illinois
Purdue
NW
Minnesota

Its the fact that the bad is real bad - problem for sure in terms of perception of the BIG.

Iowa even if they win on Friday will have beaten 0 quality teams. The success this year is due to a ridiculously easy schedule due to a terrible Big 10. That being said, I hope they continue to take advantage of it.

The coaching does what they have shown they will do the majority of the time over the last 14 years, develop talent. The team is much better now than when it played NIU.

As CAAR has said, the attrition really took a toll on the Hawkeyes. The recruiting has been pretty good the last couple year, and this year is looking to be solid considering our 4 win season last year.

All in all, the staff has done a good job of righting the ship fairly fast in just one season.

I would put NW in the lower of the middling. I don't think they are as bad as their record indicates. They have been in alot of games that they ended up losing.. Much like us a year ago.
Minnesota in the bottom???? They are better than that.

You need to put Michigan in "The Bad" for sure. Possibly Penn State.

If Iowa beats Nebraska next Friday, I will say that Iowa is the 4th best team in the BT. And, they certainly were not humiliated by the top three, all of which are BCS Bowl level teams IMHO. Coming off the 4-8, playing a very tough schedule, beating the teams they should beat, the development of the defense into a very serious squad, and some significant improvement in the offense without the luxury of some great skill players, all adds up to a pretty exciting year. It would be hard to argue that the players and coaches did not do a very fine job in 2013.
