As Colin Kaepernick's last-gasp fourth-and-goal pass to Michael Crabtree fell out of the end zone, 49ers players, coaches and fans loudly complained that Ravens' cornberback Jimmy Smith should have been called for holding, which would have been given the 49ers another chance to score from the 1. Do you think it was a foul? Should it have been called? The contact happened two yards deep into the end zone, well beyond the five-yard contact zone. At first CBS' Phil Simms, a former Giants quarterback, thought it was a "good no-call" in the waning moments of the Super Boal. But the more he saw of the replay, "the more I get confused," he said.

What was your take? Did the officials swallow their whistles, afraid to make a late, Super Bowl-altering call? Or was it the right call.

Here's the replay:

When Simms was saying contact both ways, but it was initiated by the defender and continued past 5 yards turning into a clear hold and the WR tried to separate.

While you don't want a whistle to determine the outcome, you also don't want a mugging to go uncalled. Shoulda been a flag.

I've never understood the "let players determine the outcome". Someone please explain how that makes ANY sense. At all.

we won over Mich in 2011 just like that. if you think that was a PI then the one against Lowery (IIRC) should have been as well. contact both ways IMO. also worth noting that they weren't throwing the flag all game, so at that point it would have been contradictory to how they were calling the game. Ravens could have been dinged for several PI's all game and weren't.

The Lowery play was completely different. He got there a split second early. Pretty understandable no call because it was so close it can be hard to tell in live time. This hold lasted way to long to go unnoticed.

Convenient that the PI on Culliver was called, then. That was a huge play in the game, and they called it.

Those who do not think that should have been a holding call are:

A- Ravens Fans
B- Have something against the 49ers
C- Had money on the game
D- Don't understand the rules of football

Actually it was defensive holding, not PI.
Also, where is the holding call on the punt/safety?

I was wondering the same thing, but I thought about it for a bit. I think the Ravens were told to hold. Even if a flag was thrown, time would have run off the clock and they could just run another punt play or the 49'ers would just decline it anyways to save time. Am I missing something, or is there something to prevent teams from using penalties to run clock?

I wonder if the ravens coaches picked that up from the last niners game. When I was watching that game I thought they should run around and take the safety. I even thought they should hold them for as long as possible. Yea I'm smart. :)

Holding on the punt/safety would result in a safety, right? That's why the Ravens were holding. It didn't matter.

Even Harbaugh said they are taught to practically tackle in that situation. Waste as much time as possible. I'd like to see a replay of it, because at that point I wasn't really watching too closely.

yep, if I was the Raven's I would have held like a mo-fo on that punt/safety ... also, I would've put Jacoby Jones back there to "punt" because he could have probably ran around for the whole 12 seconds, with all of that holding going on

I always thought the same thing. I suppose they are trying to put on the idea that they may still punt...but man, he can run from one side to the other fairly easily and waste 2-3 more seconds.

If you remember, even Sims said he was 'confused' the more times he saw the non-call against Crabtree replayed, meaning he was inclined to take back his earlier no-call opinion.

Very good point about using jones on safety...regardless,it was coached and carried out well, holding and all.

The holding/mugging should have been called when 49ers had ball. Turrible non-call.
