Substitutions

Happy with the win, but this has been on my mind for awhile. I think Fran needs to turn over the subbing of players to an assistant coach. Just worry about the play on the floor and let an assistant do the subbing.

For the most part Fran subs for 2 reasons, fouls and making mistakes. It's not 100% of the time but the majority. What I saw today with JU sitting for long periods of time. Granted, it wasn't his best game as a hawkeye, but we still need him out there. Take JO, he gets minimal things accomplished. He doesn't even cut hard or tight off screens, isn't even looking to shoot off those screens. He has to be wide open for an attempt. He makes safe passes and rarely turns the ball over. Defensively, he is average at best. Once again, he takes very few chances. Won't make many mistakes. As I saw in another post comparing him to JR, which I would agree with. It just seemed like Uthoff was lost on the bench for a long time.

They can discuss it beforehand and let the AC do the subbing. Obviously, Fran has the final say during the game. It would just be 1 more thing that he doesn't have to worry about during the game.

Not the game to make this comment. He actually managed the subs really well and didn't over sub (which he does at times). He had his finger on the pulse of the game and even brought white in earlier than usual with 3 fouls just for a spark. Also managed Woody well with his fouls and found ways to maximize his time on such a good day. Oglesby is a good defender and was forced to play more due to injury to jok as Oglesby and clemmons pick up the slack at the 2.

Gotta agree with ya here. Some of his substituion patterns have been head scratching the first 4 years, but I thought he did a great job today. What I thought turned the game around was in the second half when we had 5 TO and 1 shot attempt. Fran went to a 3 guard lineup of Gesell, Sapp, and JO to handle OSU's pressure, and it worked. We stopped turning it over, and started turning it up.

I really thought part of the problem with the manny game was the substitutions. But today it was great. I thought the big move was putting white in with 3 fouls a little earlier than you usually do. White had the energy needed and he was smart enough to stay away from a fourth foul. Not to mention he basically won the game when he game in and just went off.
