Struggiling offense

Jon posted a good article about the long term troubles of the offense but did not really want to speculate as to why. One of the problems over the years despite having a strong running game when it comes to crunch time when they are 3rd or 4th and one they fail. There are 3 reasons IMHO for this. 1. They are in a hurry to get the play off before the defense gets set invariably leading to a penalty 1/2 the time. In the bowl game we were such a hurry on the 4th and one that we didn't notice that McNutt was wide open. 2. Offensive formation is so compact with either no or 1 reciever flanked that there is little room to run. Why not flank 4 or 5 recievers out and still run you will have 35%-45% less players in the play. 3. Why not be creative. Bring Derby in as the lone person in the backfield (shotgun) and flank out 5 people wide. If the defense plays you man to man on the 5 flankers there is only one unblocked person and if they have the safties out there like Iowa does there are equal or more blockers than defensive players. Derby is physically much stronger and much harder to bring down and he chooses the hole with some momentum from the shotgun. You see other teams do this with the wildcat. KOK is the least creative OC in the country.

Yes you about summed it up. The most important point is the OC he still doesn't get what it takes to be successful in the conference. KF can say allllllll he wants being rated in the bottom half of D1 in teh 13 year era is enough data points to say it's more than a trend toward poor offense. Particularly when you consider the OL that have been drafted into the NFL and are playing. It's NOT due to a lack of lineman talent.

All those things you said plus

the plays are almost always to the tailback and never a counter to the fb. The defense can almost always move toward the keys. I think brad rogers can run the friggin ball

if you spread the field with 4 wideouts and a fb , jvb is plenty big enough and mobil enough to run for a yard.

how about taking a shot with deep pass after a hard play action run fake on 3rd and 1 , with a short safety route to the TE available.

Meanwhile we watch Houston go up and down the field on a team we could only score 3 pts. against. Sigh...
