Story w/ Video: After Slow Start, Hawkeyes Bench Hitting Stride

I love me some Wagner. Kid is going to be a great player for the Hawks. Willing to do the little things!

We'll see how he develops going forward, but at least this year, he makes me think this is the type of role that a freshman Basabe would have played on a team like this.

Uh, Baer and Wagner are playing great ball. Put another 10-20 pounds and some more experience on these guys, and they will be starter material for next year. Just keep giving them the minutes. I would like to get our guys big time minutes. Like the 2nd half of the Michigan game. Tough stretches are great exposure for these guys.

I would like to see a lot more C Williams this year too. He needs consistent minutes each game. Not a lot. Just have him play a couple minutes before the TV timeout, and a little after. That will get him in the game, adjusted and then settled in. Experience will help... A game or three with major minutes would be nice too. Maybe that happens tonight?? It had better.

I agree with this, this is all the minutes Basabe would have gotten on this team VS the team Fran took over.

I think Wagner has a higher ceiling that Basabe, because Wagner is just so much more athletic than Basabe. Wagner is also bigger than Basabe. Basabe came in at around 205 lbs and played there for his Fr. year, then he put on 25 lbs and got to 230 for his So. year, and that didn't work, he couldn't carry that weight and be effective. So he lost about 10 lbs and played at about 220 as a Jr. and Sr.. Wagner won't have the problem. He is playing at 225 as a Fr. and will probably put on a few lbs each year. He is so much more athletic than Basabe, that he will be able to play with the added weight.

Not sure if Wagner will ever develop a pure offensive game or not but I don't think we'll need it anyway. If he does its just a huge bonus. At the very worst I see him being a more athletic Reggie Evans, able to rebound and play tough D etc. I love the way he sets screens and then rolls aggressively. He has great hands on the roll and can catch it on the move and power up to the rim without hesitation. Really his strong hands and powerful moves to the hoop are his best asset. Just really like what I see with him.
