STORY (W/ Vid): Doyle Wants Iowa to Be Better Than Everybody at Training During Pandemic

The Washed-Up Walkons addressed this a bit on a recent pod: which programs will fair the best coming out of the break. They thought Iowa was poised to take advantage due to Doyle, the consistency within the staff and with schemes, and the character of the players. They did express concern about Petras not getting spring ball reps, and potentially not getting as many fall reps as he otherwise could if there is an abbreviated season.

In terms of the QB play I guess how much of a difference would spring have made since it is so far from the season anyway? How many different things or new things are they working on besides him just getting most of the reps now? He should have always been working on the mental reps and from what everyone was saying last year he had just as good an understanding of the offense as Stanley. So really it is working on etc timing with the receivers which I would think he would lose a little anyway unless they all workout in the off-season.

My guess is there is "Homework" for the guys to be studying anyway. Does anyone know if Petras stays in town over the summer or does he go home or go to camps? If he is able to get out and get some reps with some of the receivers from Iowa of some local guys he knows? I think anything lost from the spring can be evened out by some good work in the off-season especially if he can work with the guys on our locker room.

The big key for Iowa which is the same every year but probably more so this season is can they stay healthy and keep the experienced guys in the lineups early in the season and allow the younger guys to work in and get experience in practice.

I think if they can stay healthy they have a good shot at the division. If we start getting hit with the injury bug it is not going to be a fun season and could snowball fast. I think for that reason though the season is more wide open than any in the recent past. Without the extra work for the younger guys schools such as Ohio Stadium, Michigan, PSU, and Wisconsin to a point may not be able to plug and play as well. It could be a very interesting season, and I don't think we are going to see multiple zero loss teams in the playoffs

I think the "Petras missed Spring Ball" is a bit overplayed. He's already been involved in 2 previous Springs, having been an early enrollee, and during the Holiday Bowl prep, it sounds like he got a lot of work with the 1's as well. I think given his make-up, we'll be just fine. My bigger concern is OL cohesion. That absolutely takes time to get down.

Agreed. Hate to say it, but Iowa QBs get worse with more reps. Just Sayn.
