stop bashing Vandenberg....

He did admittedly miss a couple of throws. But here are some thoughts before you say how bad he played.
1. There were guys in his face all day. how do you throw it away when you step back, turn around and there are linemen in your face. This is on the o-line.
2. We miss McNutt. our receivers simply weren't open. Only passes available were short.
3. First game under new system. There were some miscues and generally iffy plays, but that will get better as the season moves on.

my two cents.

I think well see a different team next week. It's a home game, in better playing conditions, against iowa state. Learn from this game and move on.

JVB never steps up in the pocket...lot of sacks are on him.

Receivers were open downfield, but he constantly panics on the road.

So far, first game away from Kinnick is same as all of last year with him. Doesnt look like that will change.

You shouldn't bash him b/c he is Hawk that represents himself well. But to note that he played poorly or mediocre or not a great QB should be fair game - its certainly the truth.

1. In other words, he didn't learn from last year. Yes, the OL missed some blocks, as did RBs, in pass protection. But, in JVBs defense, I am sure NIU game-planned this way. And at least he didn't hurt us with bad turnovers.

2. Sure, we miss McNutt, but some of JVBs passes were Jakers. But again, at least he didn't hurt us.

3. Yes, there were some iffy plays, but again, at least JVB didn't hurt us.

So, on balance, I agree, stop bashing JVB. But PLEASE get him a hearing test (or clean out the ears, he seems unable to hear footsteps) and a vision test (peripheral seems lacking).

You wonder if it's the new offense or if JV just seems to lack some poise and the ability to read defense's. He's an intelligent kid but that does not always transfer completely to the field.

Concerned with the offensive play calling. A lot of receivers standing still and not getting separation. We need to get players in motion and hit players in stride.

Did they simply not have anything open or was it planned to rarely go deep?

It's just game one so not going to freak out, but concerned about the passing game from schemes to QB to pass protection. The good news is UI think the running game was pretty good.

I don't see JVB as the problem. He may not be hurting us, but I don't think he has really performed to his potential either. I would grade his play as a C+. He did some good things, like recognising the blitz's but he also missed some easy throws. And he led the offense down the field to the red zone 8 (9?) times and they only scored one time.

He threw no picks today. I don't recall a single false start penalty. He did not fumble.
True, he was off today, but you will see a better JVB next week.

JVB gets a pass from me, he didn't cost us a win nor did he get us a win. We won as a team today, and it was great to see us making plays on special teams.

How many games did we win under the good captain early in his career because of special team's play? Stay the course, this team and coaching staff is all learning to play together.

Go Hawks

They still are learning the offense. Davis has no way opened the offense. The offense needs more work, timing and reps. The O has no way reached it's PO.

Exactly, JVB did NOT lose the game today.

I am (still) concerned with play-calling in the red zone.
