Stewart Mandel: Clayborn and the Heisman

The other thing we know for certain is that come December, there will be at least one or two finalists, and perhaps even a winner, who weren't on anybody's radar coming into the season. Go back to this time last year and you won't find Ingram, Toby Gerhart or Ndamukong Suh on too many Heisman Watch lists. Who will those guys be this year? Like I said, we don't know. It would be impossible to predict. They may include someone who's not even currently projected to start for his team. But here are a few under-the-radar possibilities: Arizona running back Nic Grigsby, Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton, and, for this year's Suh, Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn.

Jake Locker more likely to win Heisman than Mark Ingram; more mail - Stewart Mandel - SI.com

But wait, I thought from reading the threads about Clayborn today that he was no good. Who pays this Mandelbaum guy for his opinion anyway.

But seriously, interesting to see Grigsby and Clayborn on the list, since we have proof that Clayborn is faster. ;)

there is an interesting thread on another site that likes to take jabs at AC......I don't know how to link directly to the post, so i'll link the thread, and then paste the post......

"Agreed. Although I think Clayborn's game is great, it is the conditioning that needs to improve vastly. Suh was in phenomenal condition, especially for a DT. Clayborn looks like he is having a arythmia after the first series of every game."

Yeah, he almost cost us the game at PSU. He basically took the 4th quarter off. He looked exhausted. ;)

The second half of the article about playoff vs. current system had a lot of truth to it, I think it changed my feelings about the subject.

If Iowa runs the table and our defense is just absolutely dominate (which it will be) and Clayborn has a ridiculous season tackles and sacks wise with some luck sprinkled on top (i.e. scoring some touchdowns, or scooping up some fumbles for TD's in big games) I think he could win it. All of those things have to happen though.

I dont agree with what is being said about Clayborn being out of shape but he definitely wasnt at his physical peak in the UNI game. In the 4th quarter he was just holding onto the lineman blocking him

It was hotter than hell that day which had a lot to do with it
