So Steve Wiltfong of 247sports.com was at the Warren Central (Indianapolis) vs. Glenville (Cleveland) game tonight and tweeted about it all night. Both teams are widely considered top 20 teams nationally this year, and Wiltfong said that over 40 future D1 players were on the field. He had a ton of good things to say about Iowa target, SR QB Cardale Jones of Glenville. He mentioned that Jones is poised and talented, though he lacks polish. Jones led Glenville down the field to come from down 21-20 in the final minute (converting a 4th and 16 with a 31 yard pass) to win on his 2-yard touchdown with ten seconds left. Read all the posts about the game and about Jones here:

I believe the implication of Rudock's commitment is that Jones will look another direction rather than Iowa not giving him a scholarship if he wants one. A big strong guys that could project to multiple positions and is very athletic will be given a spot if he wants to be a Hawkeye. There have been a lot of years where Iowa took multiple QB's, and every time, the situation has panned out, either by transfer, by position change, or by one player being a content backup. With Iowa not picking up a potential starter in the '09 class and only picking up one in the '10 class, I honestly think that it is likely that Iowa goes after two guys with starting potential in the '11 class.

Ruddocks commitment shouldn't keep Iowa from recruiting Jones. If Jones ends up at Iowa, he will be given every oppertunity to play QB. If the coaching staff believes he can help out in other areas (ala McNutt) they will ask Jones to make a position change. At that time the ball will be in Jones' court.

I live in Ft. Worth and I am going to watch the Dallas Skyline vs St. Thomas Aquinas game at Jerry World on labor day. I will keep you all filled in on how future hawk Ruddock does. Should be awesome time.

Get outta here- I completely missed they were coming to town! I'll probably go as well!

this coaching staff never turns down an athlete who projects at multiple positions. as mentioned above, it always works out as you can never have too much talent.

Agree with you that Ferentz will take Jones if the kid wants to be a Hawkeye.

But you have the numbers on QBs in the past two classes wrong: Iowa wasn't shut out in 2009 but picked up not one but TWO potential starters in Vandenberg and Weinke, and FOUR QBs in the incoming freshmen--not just highly-rated AJ Derby but Vier and two walk-ons who could have gone on schollies to Division 1 programs--Haluska and the kid from the Twin Cities.

So there is both depth and quality beyond Stanzi. But who isn't to say that Jones could not win the job over Derby, Rudock, et al? Right now the Hawkeyes are probably no more than another big-time lineman or two, a top WR or two, and maybe another powerful RB away from an exceptional offense in 2012 and after: Jones certainly could not go wrong choosing the Hawkeyes, a lot of options beyond just QB alone.

Vandenberg and Weinke were both class of '08--RSF in '09--and Vier already changed positions (I doubt they ever had the intention of having him play QB). Walkons will never compete for the job, so that leaves just one QB in the two years ahead of the current class that will ever compete for the job.
