During this very difficult time for our family, we have been overwhelmed by the tremendous outpouring of support we have received from family, friends, the community and the Hawkeye Nation. It means a great deal to us to have so many people reaching out to us and telling us that they are praying for Brett.

We know hes in a coma, but has anything be released why hes in a coma? Is it his heart, liver, etc...??? What the dr's are doing to make him better? I havent heard much besides he is in a coma, any information would be greatly appreciated.

They were concerned that his brain went without oxygen for so long that he would have brain damage. Doctors put him in a medically induced coma and lowered is body temperature in an attempt to limit or reduce brain damage, sort of like simulating drowning in very cold water.

There was one article that said he was being brought out and made it seem like it would be very soon. Everything else sounded like they wanted to try and bring him out of it within a week or so, IMO.

And I wouldn't read too much into the "now more than ever" comment. That could easily just mean that just because he's soon to be out of the coma doesn't mean that it's all over and done with. That doesn't make it necessarily serious.

I think the family wants to keep this a private matter (as they stated in the letter).
