Starting 5 for Iowa: The Hawkeye State

Interesting that, quite possibly, the Hawkeyes will have all Iowans in next year's starting Lineup.

PG- Mike Gesell, Sioux City (AAU team)
SG- Peter Jok WDM
3- Dale Jones Waterloo
4- Jarrod Uthoff CR
5- Woody Sioux City

Off bench - Nick Baer Bett

Other Hawkeyes: Sapp, Dom Uhl , ???

Does Lil brother have any Iowa kids?

I think your right about that being their starting lineup. Jones with his shooting touch and size will inherit that 4 spot over the true freshman coming in. I think/hope Jok makes a leap this year. If he can play smarter with less turnovers and defensive mistakes the sky is the limit for him. He has the ultimate green light to shoot. Would love to see him work on driving to the hole more. He's such a good free throw shooter him shooting more would be awesome.

Saw a comment that Peter Jok is more fit than ever before. Improved fitness could really help Peter's game, overall. Glad to hear that he's been working on it.

Go Hawks

I'm not sure a starting lineup of all Iowans is something to be proud of. Not only is Iowa a very low population state with no urban areas, but it means the coach is only managing to land the low hanging fruit; kids who grew up wanting to play for the school regardless of who is coaching it and out of staters who are not good enough to start. I'd love to see a couple of Iowa guys in the lineup sprinkled in with some studs from Chicago or Michigan, and maybe a kid from the east coast. That's called well rounded recruiting. That's how you build a top 10 team.

If they weren't expected to be any good I'd maybe lean your way. However this group had a good season last year. This group with Jones stepping in for White shouldn't drop off much if at all from that. In fact with the expected improvement of Uthoff, Jok etc I think they could even be better. It may be tough to do as the league as a whole will be down right tough too. However the issue with the general premise of your take I see what your saying but honestly I kinda disagree with it for now. Just about any other year I would have agreed with you though. But Iowa has been churning out some really good players the last handful of years. The upcoming years Iowa has already got commitments from the best the state has to offer. I really don't have a problem with them getting these kids at all if they are as good as advertised. That said you don't turn down better kids from other states if they'd like to come just out of states pride either. But that's not what's happening. Building a top 10 team is tough regardless of the recruiting makeup of your team. But I'd rather Iowa be in the situation they are in having all 5 starters be from Iowa then ISU where they don't have any on their whole roster just about. Even if ISU is a top 15ish team I'd take more pride in how Fran is doing things and that's with my black and gold goggles on of course.

Low hanging fruit? A top 50 kid, a top 100 kid and a top 125 kid. According to you Fran has other "low quality" players coming in with #53 ranked Conner, #18 ranked and 5* kid Weiscamp, and then another potential 5* in Patrick. Yeah, Fran should just take a "pass" on the Iowa kids, cause they ain't worth a damn according to you.

You truely are are the most miserable poster on this site....

Apparently, 'iowalaw' has been visiting some interstellar Space station for past few years.

Here's some IOWA kids he/she might want to look-up, before posting on HN, ever again.

Doug McDermott, Harrison Barnes, Marcus Paige, Ricky Davis, Kirk Hinrichs, Jarrod Uthoff,
Adam Haluska, Nick Collison. There's a start for 'law'

If a team of Iowa kids can make some noise, it will be better for the state than last year's other in-state teams which folded in the tourney.

Woodbury, Gesell, and Clemmons look all grown-up. Woodbury looks like he could be a monster in the center position this year. Uhl has gone from 200 lbs to 215, and he probably will put on another five pounds or so before the start of the season. Uhoff is going to be in the 220 pound range this coming year. White will be missed, but the returning players are going to be a lot stronger and more experienced than last year. There shouldn't be any returning guards in the conference more knowledgeable than Gesell and Clemmons. It looks like Iowa could be a dangerous three point shooting team this year. Fran has a lot of options to work with this year.

I ❤️ Dale Jones. He looks as wide as a power forward but really showed a smooth stroke. Off the dribble too. My concern with Jok has always been more ball handling. He is a sniper though.

That is a nice list of 8 Iowans over the past 20 years who were solid players. Now do the same with Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, and Ohio. You will find the number of talented bball players in those states is exponentially higher. For that reason, we have to bring in out of staters just to stay on par with the rest of the league.

Next year's wonderful all Iowa team will be projected to be between 7th and 9th in the Big 10. If that is what you strive for, then your expectations are too low.

If Iowa finishes between 7th and 9th place then the whole damn conference should be invited to the NCAA tournament. I see them as a 3rd to 5th place team.

Good post. Agree 100%.

UNI has made a pretty good job of using a lot of iowa boys to win a lot of games. And our iowa boys are actually better than theirs. Iowa is actually under appreciated when it comes to athletic talent in all sports. Protect the borders and keep the talent from Iowa in Iowa, then fill in its players from where you can get them.

I do not think Jok will ever be great defensively, especially as a straight up on-the-ball defender. He's a catch and shoot guy, taking guys off the dribble really isn't his thing. As long as he is hitting jumpers(FG% low 40's or better) and isn't defensive liability I am good.

Define urban area? I don't understand the difference between Des Moines and Chicago. I don't think it has any bearing on whether we can have good basketball team or not. We can still have farmers on the team and still go to NCAA.

If you were going to give the world an enema you'd stick it in iowalaw.. why anyone pays attention to this DB is a mystery to me.

I worry you may be right about him at the defensive end. His lateral ability just isn't that great. That said if a guy plays smart he can compensate for that. He has the size and length to be a decent defender so long as the effort is there along with playing smart.

I expect he'll be more then just a catch and shoot guy at the offensive end. He showed glimpses last year of trying to go to the hole some. He's doing it in the prime time league too. Besides just keeping the defense honest and taking what they give you he's just such a darn good free throw shooter he needs to try and get there more. I think the competition of the new guys Moss, Flemming, Ellingston etc I think he'll have to improve or see his mins go down.

Do you mean like the 5 non-Iowa kids coming in this year, of which I've seen a couple ranked in the top 10 prospects in Illinois?

If you don't thnk Fran is going after the best players he can get, then I don't know what to say. It just happens we have a group right now where those "best players" are from Iowa and several were top-150 kids. If you can get quality in state, you do it.

It's cool that we may have 5 Iowa guys starting this year, but I doubt that's some wild strategy from Fran
