I didn't attempt to compare the two team's defenses but it feels like Stanzi benefited from an overall stronger defense as well.

interesting, thanks for posting. I think if Jake comes up with a catch phrase, like "if you don't love it, leave it" his popularity would soar. j/k winning is the important number. I think Stanzi played with better defenses, but also played against tougher schedules IMO.

Yeah, think about the difference in that scenario...who would you rather have lined up in the I behind you. Shonn Greene or Mark Weisman. No offense to Mark, but I believe that poll comes in 100% to Mr Greene. In reference to the other post...RS threw 4-5 pick sixes in 2009 and 14 interceptions. His defense in 2009 was 10 times better than the ones Rudock is playing with last year and this year.

Very interesting ... thanks for running the analysis. Facts are stubborn things.

Can we get opponent comparison as well as opponent record? I feel that plays a big part.

If Stanzi started with NW start I think he only has 4 non-conf games in his first 18...Rudock probably has 8. Schedule last year was certainly tougher for Rudock than this year; I am struggling to recall too many details about 2008 schedue for Stanzi.

I know quality of defensive opponents between players and early and later in their careers makes a big difference but Rudock looks like he's getting better and his stats reflect that. He still needs work, especially with the long ball but you can see near game to game development. If Davis does nothing else but develop QB's his tenure can't be considered a bust here.

Dog poo against Iowa St. Went 8 for 8 against Pittsburgh and basically won the job after that game. Wasn't great at illinois rally came up short at the end. Drove the team down the field for GW FG against #1 Penn st. Greene got his bell rung and fumbled on a illegal hit late in the NW game which ended in a loss. Fullback went the wrong way and SG got smothered on a 4th and 1 on a drive that would have won the game.

just throwing out random thoughts to jog your memory.

I think I remember every single instance you mentioned...I meant that I don't recall the quality of those teams. I remember PSU was top 5 and that Illinois was not good...I remember escaping an average (at best?) Purdue team at home on senior day.

I agree with most of what you say here, but Ruddock had the #7 defense in the COUNTRY last year.

Ultimately, Stanzi won more games, and he had great hair. Therefore he is considered the better QB. It's simple math. Wins+Hair=lasagna

Stanzi played with much better talent against opponents who also had much better talent.

It feels like this conference isn't really a meaningful part of the college football landscape anymore.

Stanzi 7.6 ypa vs Rudock 6.8 ypa. That's advantage Stanzi but it would be interesting to see what Stanzi would do in the GD system and vice versa.

Stanzi's rally against Illinois actually didn't come up short. Greene scored with around a minute left to take the lead. The TD run also put him over 100 yards on the day which ended up being a big deal because he was the only back to rush for 100 yards every game. After the go ahead score Illinois marched down the field with ease and kicked a game winning field goal.

I don't know why we have a comparison. I don't think anybody thinks Jake is a bad quarterback. Ricki Stanzi obviously got better each year. What we saw from Jake in the 1st 3 1/2 games was a stagnant offense and when CJ came in the offense was more explosive. Against Indiana Jake had the offense rolling. I think we as fans just want the qb who gives us the best chance to win whether it's Jake or CJ.

In the end none of this really matters. Now that the Offense has seen a glimmer of light the defense has decided to hibernate for the winter in mid-October.
