Stanzi at MSU in 2009

Just to talk about something else. I watch some you tube hawks highlights fairly often when they pop on on you tube. I was watching highlights of Iowa at MSU 2009 and my gosh what a gamer bunch that 2009 squad was. Just great defenses and plenty of offensive power.

And Ricky Stanzi, wow what a rollercoaster ride he had us on with INTs followed by great throws.

If you remember, a hold on MSU's jailbird Rucker on DJK put Iowa first and 10 at the MSU 6 or 7 with about 15 seconds to go. The first down play call included a slight rollout to the right with Moeacki doing a bit of a delay route to the left which was a staple of Iowa TEs by the goal line back then. If you watch DJK was the left receiver and when he broke across in a post pattern to the middle of the endzone his defender played Stanzi's eyes and left DJK, wide open. The defender on Moeacki stayed with the TE pretty well and that other defender who left DJK was all over Moeacki.

All this left DJK alone, wide open by 15 yards all around him. Stanzi did have a rusher coming at him but if the hawks had not got that 4th down TD this first down play would have really been talked about.

Ricky lived on the edge throwing to wide open defenders for picks and pick sixes that season but he was money on this drive for the most part.

My son and I went to that game, what a great finish. I lost my voice at that game and life would never be the same. I had cancer and have had many surgeries since. I now have to talk through a prosthetic, but at least I can talk. That game will always stand out for me!

We had lost NINE STRAIGHT games decided by 3 or less from 05 thru most of 08, then from end of 08 thru Stanzi breaking leg in 09 we won those games (and throttled the others). Magical year+.

I'm not sure I remember that much about the game itself. It was raining most of the time. I do remember Stanzi to Marvin for the win! I can see the guy who was sitting by us clearly drunk and very obnoxious. Falling about three bleacher seats forward on his aspen making me smile ear to ear! Waking up the next morning and unusually I still didn't have my voice back. Little did I know what I was in for. Life can be fickle!

I too was there. While the Hawks were lined up for the final play, the place was so loud I literally couldn't hear the person next to me. Then #7 got 6, and the place hushed in like 2 seconds. Awesome.

Call me one who did NOT enjoy that game - a feeling I shared with Ed Podolak. MSU had been cheap-shotting all night. In 2019/20, there probably would have been close to a half-dozen targeting calls, all on Michigan State. But the good part I remembered about that game was watching Stanzi at the beginning of that final drive. You could just see that he was "in control" - I can't put it into any better words, but I could tell that drive was going to work out OK for us. He had a poised look about him that you just don't often see - and bluntly, I never saw when he was a Sr. in the late-season melt-down of 2010. That is the kind of leadership I want to see out of a Hawkeye QB, but you rarely if ever see - you certainly never saw it when Nathan Stanley was playing a road game.

I was there. The ending was complete drama. Wow! I got harassed a bit on my way out of the stadium. Oh well.

You better go back and watch Nate at QB vs Iowa State in Ames in 2017. He was a damn machine. 5 TDs.
