Spring practice this week?

Doesn't spring practice start this week?

What are the big position battles we have? I know there will be competition for the spots in the OL and some linebackers. We also have to fill Spivey's spot. Is that wide open or is there an entrenched favorite.

Pretty sure practice starts Wednesday (that's when Ferentz's spring press conference is anyway). Jordan Bernstine is probably the favorite, though I wouldn't be too surprised if Micah Hyde beat him out. He was the #3 corner at the Orange Bowl as a freshman, so he seems to be the next great corner for us.

What is this? Football talk? Oh thank God! The desolation of winter is finally ending!

Anyway, who do you think take the two open LB spots? I thinking probably Tarp and Tyler Nielson from Humboldt. Think he was a four star that just got caught in the logjam ahead of him. I think he's a junior now if i'm not mistaken.

Don't forget Troy Johnson (a senior) who earned BT DPOW honors after the Minnesota game. He's got good game too, and he's an upperclassman. Tarp may move to the middle, who knows?

Presser on Wednesday...we will have a live chat and type up Kirk's words as he says them, like we did each week during football season.

Anybody going down to the coaches clinic this weekend? In years past Ferentz has been one of the main speakers, but it looks like Parker and Philbin get honors this year.

Tarp will be a redshirt senior next year. I had him in a class freshman year. He's a great guy, hope he gets the job.

If Im not mistaken, isnt Lance Tillison coming back. I would think he will be in the mix.

Tillison is back as a walk-on. One of the more interesting questions surrounding Tillison is what class he's going to be in eligibility-wise. I frankly believe that it will be cool if he ends up having 2 years left.

My bet on the LB battle:

WILL LB: Tyler Nielsen - The kid is super fast and incredibly athletic. Considering what I've read that Edds has said about him, it appears he has been groomed to replace Edds.

Mike LB: Jeff Tarpinian - I think he moves to Mike, which will be a good thing for Hawk fans. The thing we will miss most about Angerer will be his crazy good pass coverage skills, and I think Tarpinian is probably the strongest pass coverage LB we have (outside of Nielsen).

SAM LB: Jeremiah Hunter. Obvious reasoning. I think he and Nielsen will emerge as the stars of the LB core in 2010.

I actually expect that the guys we have at LB won't matter all the much....I expect our DL to be more than good enough to compensate for any deficiency we have at LB (that is NOT to say I think we'll have a deficiency at LB, I think we'll be QUITE good there). I fully expect Ballard to "breakout" in 2010. I think we'll see a jump out of both Ballard and Binns like we saw from Clayborn (from his SO to JR year). Klug was playing at a VERY high level at the end of last season as well. I am VERY excited about our DL for 2010....I truly believe it will be the best DL unit in the country if everything develops the way I see it developing.
