Pat Forde at Yahoo! Sports seems to think it is, pointing out that a number of players in the BCS championship game -- including Auburn's Nick Marshall and Florida State running backs Devonta Freeman and James Wilder -- did not participate in spring drills.
Perhaps for some of the marquee players in the SEC spring ball is not essential. For teams like Iowa, however, most of the players will need all the practice and development they can get.
