Spring Football: Kirk Ferentz

"67 of 77 senior starters under Coach Ferentz have been selected in the NFL draft or signed to an NFL free agent contract."

If that is not a selling point I don't know what it. 87% of the people that stick around and play get a shot at the next level.

Does this count this year? Because the SR starters will go 6 for 6 with Eubanks being the only possible? but I think he will at least get a shot. .

Factor in the handful of guys that left early and this would be even higher.

How could it include this year when the draft hasn't even taken place yet.

You are interpreting that wrong. It isn't 87% of people that stick around get a shot. It is 87% of players who started their senior year so a guy like Travis Meade doesn't fall into that statistic and doesn't pull that number down. But a guy Stross, who did start does fall into that statistic and will likely bring it down when he doesn't get a sniff in the nfl.

That said, it is still a statistic that seems nearly impossible.

The other thing that sticks out to me is the longevity of the assistants in the program. Obviously you need to make the right call with the hiring process...but there is no substitute for continuity in the coaching staff. I'm sure that also helps in attracting assistants like Coach Campbell where he's a highly coveted assistant and he knows that he's got a stable position with a great staff and virtually the only way he's leaving is if he's taking the next step in his career.

It also helps to keep the right guys on the bus like Coach Parker...who may have retired or looked for greener pastures in a staff that was constantly turning over...but we've got one of the best coordinators in the country and we're not paying him millions and we know that this is his last stop.

just out of curiosity....
that 67 out of 77 stat does sound good, but does anyone know what kind of numbers other schools have?
say a comparison to Wisconsin, Nebraska and other teams that we recruit against and are at a similar program level

I said stick around "and play." I understand that it is starters and not just seniors.

But yes that is an awesome stat and gets me excited for next year. I have to think that a good portion of the seniors that will start next year will have the same opportunities.

"Only six assistant coaches have left the Ferentz staff in the last 10 years. Of those six, one retired, three went to the NFL and two left to become coordinators."

Would you consider this a contrast to Fry? I know Fry made an effort to hire assistants that wanted to be head coaches because that was the type of person he wanted around his players. Just seems like he must have had more assistant coach turnover. I was pretty young so can one of you old farts bring me up to speed?

That IS truly amazing. I can't wait for football season.

I am typing this from memory, without checking actual numbers. I think Hayden and Kirk had similar thinking in their assistant hires.

I am not sure Bill Snyder was looking but the KState offer was one where they gave him total control.
Alvarez and McCarney actually left to become defensive coordinators with other schools (ND and Wis) before they actually became head coaches. The Stoops brothers were more grad assistants than assistant coaches, as I recall at Iowa.

I am not sure what goals are for current assistants. I think Phil Parker, Rick K, Eric Johnson, Erb, LB coach (drawing a blank) will eventually leave for coordinator type jobs or HC, if offered. However, it will take good offers since they are comfortable at Iowa.
Norm and Morgan will retire rather than move elsewhere. KOK is happy as OC and no desire to become head coach, based on everything I read.
