Spring Depth Charts

Good lord.

When Wirfs leaves after this year it doesn't look real great for next season's OL. Yowsers.
That's a lot of size, talent, & experience missing for the '20 season. They better take advantage of what they have this year.

What's interesting to me is that going into last yr our LBs was the biggest question mark and now outside of AJE it may be the least worrisome group. I think we are pretty deep at LB now.
Kinda surprised to see Merriweather at the top. Wasn't he a basketball player mostly that we offered really late? Good size great athlete just kinda green to the position? Big shoes to fill if he's replacing either Gersonde or Hooker.

He may not go. Who knows. OL should be pretty solid for years to come. There's depth not seen on that chart that will develop into some good players. Either freshmen now or incoming freshmen.

Good signs for Doyle, Tracy, Shannon, Linderbaum, Ragaini, and Waggoner to show up so early. Waggoner especially must have hit the weight room this year. Seems like he put on some good weight.

Is Schulte and Nathan Nelson showing up an indication of the shallow depth, or are they really doing well? Obviously Nixon is not gonna be handed a role after having to be separate from the team for a while, but I gotta believe he'll get his shot.

Interesting that Mansell has been able to stave off Petras for the backup QB job. I like them both, but I simply figured Petras fits our QB mold better.

Iowa hasn't had a truly bad OL in a long time. We sometimes fall prey to injuries and inexperience, but KF and staff have shown the ability to trot out at least serviceable groups year after year.

The only thing holding back Mansell is his decision making. I'm high on him. He just needs more experience.

Wirfs and A Jackson are both technically juniors this year. Both could go pro but I wouldn’t be 100% positive on that.

Kallenberger played well last year. Linderbaum, Barnwart, Ezra Miller, Plumb should be serviceable. OL recruiting has picked back up so we should be in good shape going forward.

Specifically Tackle recruiting. GD's focus on those small, fast skill players that mostly never panned out caused us to whiff on all of our OT targets, plus Pierschbacher bailing for Bama. That's what caused us to put 5 Guards/Centers out there for the next few seasons.

I'm a Mansell fan too. His HS tape had me pretty hyped about him coming out. Not so much that he can just run which he can but throw on the move with roll outs etc. He seemed pretty accurate when he had his feet set and on the move.

Interesting depth chart albeit not surprising for a KF squad. Both Paulsen’s get first crack at starting. Eventually I think Linderbaum wins the C job sliding Barnwart back to guard. Was hoping Kallenberger would slide inside.

On defense I’m surprised to not see DJ Johnson listed in the 2 deeps. My hope was that OJ would move back to safety. Very intrigued by Merriweather though. I will be extremely disappointed if Julius Brents is not an every down outside corner come the fall, he’s just too good not to be. Dline will look much different with the transfer and Nixon added back into the mix.

Piersbacher was a Center for Bama
